Sony WiFi

Hi guys,

How's everybody's doing?

I'm still haven't bought my reader, still researching and reading... I was glad to read that the 700 price was reduced by 50$... I'm really leaning towards the Sony 700, but then I read that Sony might be coming out with something with WiFi capability... is this true and if so what have transpired in terms of timetable for a release???

I also read an article in the Business Week a couple of weeks ago about Plastic Logic coming out with something pretty fancy (the size of a magazine...you can see it on Youtube). Any comment regarding this great looking device?

I guess my question is : should I wait a little longer to get a reader ??

Thanks for the input

It's a possibility, but no one can say for sure. The problem with buying any kind of technology is that something newer and better is always coming out.

I really wouldn't let it hold you back, if you are liking the 700. You can always sell it if something else comes out and get a good amount of your money back (Kindle 1s are still selling for a decent price).

Good point. But it still is a good chunk of change...

If you aren't in a huge rush, perhaps wait a while, but it's pointless waiting too long. As lilac said, technology is constantly evolving, and there is always something better just beyond the horizon.

Isn't October the month Sony usually introduces new models?

Oh come-on, not that old comment. "There is always something new coming out" You spend all day long here you know there is more to it than that way of thinking. It is not a one size fits all answer. Of course there is always something new coming out. In this day and age, anyone with half a wit understands this as a given. The approach to take is by examining the currently shipping devices and asking if any of them meet your current needs. Then consider how long you expect the device will continue to meet those needs. If something clicks, then pull the trigger now. But if you still feel at all reluctant, wait a few months to get a guage on the new devices.

I for one am not even considering a device anytime in the next 6-8 months as there are simply too many new devices coming down the pipe during that time frame. But I want something in a larger format as well as smaller but also both must take advantage of the newer flexible display tech to help insure a far less fragile device. Still I doubt I would ever put a reader in my back pocket, unless it was like that moistware Readius, a very cool device that probably six real people own.

Waiting costs a person nothing as long as you can get by without a device until that time. In fact waiting usually saves you money. Once the new devices come out but none offer anything improved over what was already on the market, you might just save a couple hundred bucks buying a less feature packed or older device. For example if the old Kindle 1 offers better features for you than the Kindle 2, you can grab a used K1 for around $200 give or take. Depending on when you bought it new last year that would be about $150-$200 savings. My guess is by the 4th quarter of this year there will be all manner of basic reading devices for well under $200.

Still if what is there now works, then yes, buy it now and enjoy it. Remember though you can always plop down under $50 for a decent used PDA type device which will let you read pretty much any ebook that is not dependent on a large format display. Then again right now the most common ereader devices are pretty much worse than paper in terms of ease of reading material that needs a bigger display anyway. So, if large format is what you are hunting, wait a while. If cheaper is what you want, wait a bit longer too.

Plastic Logic is more than a year away (see http://www.plasticlogic.com/FAQ.html). And no one really knows what is comming from there...

Is wifi really important for you? You do understand that the current e-ink tecnologie does not allow you to use the device as an netbook, or something similar?

So I agree with the others: If you want an e-book reader now, buy one NOW. There will always be something better and nicer a few months latter...

If you want to buy one now, you should consider the Cybook Gen 3 (I have one and it works great - but it is only a e-reader!). If you prefer to wait a while, you could consider the txtr...

Thanks Snipenekkid for the insightful reply. Greatly appreciated. I must admit I really want a reader, but the prospect of something like what Plastic Logic is working on makes me want to wait.

As Nelsonescorcia said Platic Logic is far from going to market, but I must admit the potential is tremendous. As for the WiFi consideration, it's more to allow the purchase of magazines and newspapers that I would want it. I do read books, but since I travel, I always want to look at magazines...( ie. Kindle, not available in Canada...)

Anyway, time will tel, but I have been bothering my wife so much with this whole reader stuff, she's probably get me one soon !!!

Thanks !
