I have a Sony Reader!

I am very excited. I love reading on my iPod Touch, but I was looking for a new larger-screen device because there are times I prefer reading on one (for example, I find the smaller screen much harder to read from while in motion so I do not take the iPod Touch to the gym). My eBookwise has been a good starter device for me but I really wanted something lighter and more portable. For various reasons, the Sony was my pick.

I just went and got it today. I am on March break now and will have time to play with it. Calibre is downloading as we speak (I am a Mac user and have no plans to use the Sony store, so Calibre will be my file manager) and I plan to download some of my Fictionwise purchases into it to put on the reader tonight.

Two interesting tidbits:

1) I saved almost $70 by asking if they had any returned units/open boxes. They did, and I got a discount.

2) I mentioned that I had been disappointed I had to come all the way to their store to get it, and the sales guy said they do not like to partner with other stores to sell the reader because they feel like if they get people into the store, they can brainwash (he used a different word) them to only buy the ebooks themselves from the Sony store. I had never heard this theory before

Ooooh, Calibre is downloaded. Off to play! Anyone have some favourites from the Mobile Read library that they want to recommend to me? The number of available titles is quite extensive and the list is rather daunting. I remember hearing something about a Sherlock Holmes omnibus, but don't know what else I should play with.

Some of my favorites are H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and Alexandre Dumas.

Just an update to say I love it! Calibre was so easy to use. I had all my Fictionwise multiformat purchases and several dozen Mobile Read books on there in about ten minutes. Easy easy. And I *love* reading on it. I thought the little flicker as it turned the pages would annoy me, but it turned out not to once I got going. The screen looking beautiful (especially on some of those Mobile Read ones with the pictures) and I love how you can use tags to make collections to make browsing easier (can't do this on the iPod Touch!) Happy happy. I will be posting a full review on Teleread soon.
