Thursday's Word of the Week, March 5, 2009
Thursday March 5, word of the week is mitigation.
I usually pull words out of posts from the previous week, but this one I just pulled out of our lawyer for a very pricey retainer. After being a dedicated employee for over 20 years and suddenly receiving a Termination of Employment Notice, without cause, due to the "current economic conditions", and being offered a severance package which is only half that expected, one may find oneself in the position of suing your employer for what may be rightfully yours; but in the meantime it's one's duty to make a concerted effort at finding and getting another job, in the "current economic coditions, and logging all attempts at such, to result in the mitigation of said damages. I'm thinking about a poll about member's current job security. (This isn't me, by the way, but the closest one to me.) ![]() Can someone mitigate our anxiety? This is just a legal use of the word, please add to my example. Last edited by Wetdogeared; 03-05-2009 at 12:11 PM. |

ouch, i'm sorry to hear that.
![]() mitigation is a good word though. it's also used often in the expression "mitigating circumstances" or to have "mitigated feelings" about something. |

Oh my dear, I'm so sorry!
I'm hearing more of this every day. Yesterday, 2 of my 3 brothers-in-law were laid off indefinitely. One worked in a pipe plant in Bham and the other was a bricklayer in the Chicago area. A nephew who sells high-end condos on and around Lakeshore Dr in Chicago is not moving any properties lately. His wife left him. On Monday, Tim's division transferred him because they were in danger of being forced to lay off the staff. And he works at the same university where I work, with supposedly iron-clad air-tight job security. However, he likes the new job much better, so that worked out OK. And the RV we bought 2 wks ago was from a couple who had lost their jobs and were in need of quick cash. It's getting scary out there, people. I reminded my sister yesterday of what the financial experts are telling people. Keep a roof over your head. Let the credit card bills go in order to make the house payments, sell whatever you aren't using, skip utility bills, just do whatever it takes to make the mortgage payment. It won't matter if your credit rating drops from unpaid bills if the house is foreclosed on, because if that happens, a credit rating will be the least of your problems. I hope you get what you deserve, and I hope you walk into a new and better job very soon! |

There are times when one must mitigate their posts for risk of offending, especially when mitigating ones mood....

WDE: Commiserations; I hope you both manage to sort out a new job and appropriate compensation.
The latest policitical scandal to hit Washington, now dubbed miti-gate, has centred around a still unnamed senior politician who believes they have the ability to solve the world's financial situation (or in the politician's case, the worlds' financial situation). [Why are you all looking at me like that again. Okay, okay. Miti... Mitti... Mitty... Walter Mitty, character who thinks he has exceptional skills, etc., as in the film with Danny Kaye from 1947. A (very bad) play on watergate. Please stop looking at me like that... No, you don't need to call pshrynk... Okay, I'll go quietly by myself....] |
