Adobe Digital Editions - upgraded and now it doesn't work

Hello.

So, it's been a couple months since I borrowed a library book, and when I opened Digital Editions the other day it told me that there was a new version out, and gave me the option of either upgrading or closing it. So I upgraded...and now it doesn't work. Originally I used it without a problem, but I can not get this to work, and I have a lovely library book waiting to be read and everything.

When I open Digital Editions, it tells me that it could not locate My Digital Editions Folder. Oddly enough, I can find the silly folder, but oh well. When I try to add a book via the Library, add item to library portion, when I click add book it tells me:
Error during recovery after failed manifest save.
Error deleting file: manifest.xml
Error detail: Error #2038

Then it will show me the book under the Library view, but won't actually open the book, nor will it even let me click on Reading view. If I close and open the program, the book dissapears. The program is also not showing my reader anymore when I plug it in, since I thought maybe I could just drag it over. Any suggestions?

Here's what I've tried so far:
  • Unintstalling and reinstalling digital editions
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling on C drive vs. G drive (My Digital Editions folder was on the G drive and I usually download there, but I figured I would give it a shot)
  • Upgrading to Adobe Reader 9.0 (and uninstalling and reinstalling DE under that)
  • Downgrading to Adobe Reader 7 (and uninstalling and reinstalling DE under that. Note: With this one I was at least able to read the books on the computer and they transfered to the reader via Calibre, but then I couldn't open them on the reader)
  • Going back to Adobe Reader 8 (and uninstalling and reinstalling DE under that again)
  • Moving the location of the My Digital Editions folder to the same folder as the program, and under documents, and manually trying to drag it where it into the DE
  • Crying angry frustrated obsenities at it
So...has anyone else had this problem, or have any idea how to fix it? I'm running Vista if that helps. I've tried looking on the adobe site but that hasn't helped either.

Thanks.

Maybe a problem with Vista? Someone else reporting having problems after upgrading but I don't know what OS they were running.

I upgraded maybe two weeks ago and haven't had any problems and am running XP Professional SP3.

I will look around the ADE FAQ and help screens and let you know if I find something.

Below is a copy/paste from adobeforums.com posted by JimLester (i assume he works for Adobe). He seems to indicate in a few other posts that using the stand-alone installer produces better results.

Perform a clean uninstall:

1.)Uninstall current version 1.7
a) Windows - do the uninstall from the Control Panel
b) Mac - Delete \Application\Adobe Digital Editions.app

2.) Delete all the contents of the weird install location that begin with digitaleditions

WinXP
c:\Document and Setings\<user>\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\www.macromedia.com\bin

Vista
c:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\www.macromedia.com\bin

Mac
~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/FlashPlayer/www.macromedia.com/bin

2.) Download Standalone Installer from:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitle...igitaleditions

3.) Launch Stand Alone Installer

This should end up with ADE launched and running

Make sure to remove any shortcuts/links you were using to find the old versions.

Thanks for searching - I looked over there but I just kept coming across old posts of people who had the same problem that they said was fixed in version 1.5.

Did the above, and tried installing on both the C and G drive - didn't work on either. (Deleted everything in between the two attempts.)

Grr. I leave for a trip in the morning and was really looking forward to reading that particular book on the bus. I appreciate the help though.

Uninstalling/Reinstalling won't help. The Digital Editions folder MUST be in your "My Documents" directory, and your system must recognize your "My Documents" directory as your "My Documents" directory (there are special API calls in Windows to get the location of your "My Documents" directory). There are ways to appropriately move the "My Documents" directory around using the Control Panel (User settings?), but I'm not a heavy Windows user so I don't know them off the top of my head.

I would suggest moving your "My Documents" directory back to your user folder temporarily, and see if that fixes your problem. If so post back, and I'll make sure to enter a bug, so that we can track this.

And, yes grooks, I do work for Adobe

I tried moving the folder to Documents, although I'm fairly certain that my Documents is tied to my G drive, which is also where the folder was before I upgraded and it worked fine. I moved it to the empty Documents folder though, and it didn't work there either.

I opened a case with Adobe before I left on my trip, and just got a reply this morning. I love when they don't really read what you wrote but skim - I put more or less the exact same thing as my first post, adding a bit more since it said to be as detailed as possible.

The response was that the error 2038 sometimes occurs when the connection is lost while downloading the ebook and with steps to how to try to fix it so that one particular ebook would open in my library. No mention about it not being able to find the Digital Editions folder. I would also think you would be able to assume, from the lengthy list of things that I've tried, that I didn't just try to open one ebook over and over again - I tried books that I have opened and read on DE before the upgrade, several different ones, and that it won't read or work at all with anything.

So I replied (very politely) that they missed the point and what the real problem is. We'll see.
