Friedrich Gerstäcker (* 10. Mai 1816 in Hamburg; † 31. Mai 1872 in Braunschweig) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller. Er ist vor allem durch seine Bücher über Nordamerika bekannt; seine Bestseller waren Die Regulatoren von Arkansas (1846) und Die Flußpiraten des Mississippi (1847).

Dieser Abenteuerroman aus dem Jahre 1860 spielt im damals noch wilden Australien und handelt von der Jagd nach dem berühmten Banditen und ausgebrochenen Sträfling John Mulligan. Wie immer hat sich Gerstäcker sehr gut informiert und trifft das Lokal- und Zeitkolorit genau
