What format is best?

There seem to be a bunch of formats out there, some proprietary and some standard stuff like TXT and PDF. Most don't look all that great on my reader with the exception of the proprietary one. Is there a format that is considered best for all readers, with the clarity and flexibility of a proprietary one?

Nope.

But there are lots of older threads here on differences between formats. You should be able to dig up lots of info if you give a look.

*laughing hysterically* The problem is digging up too MUCH info! I tried that route and darn near gave up on ebooks entirely. If it weren't for Wallcraft and his down to earth explanations, I'd still be wandering in the uncharted depths of MR, pulling my hair out and despairing of ever emerging.

The short answer to the question is: It depends on your device. It also depends on what you want to do with your ebooks. Do you delete it after you read it, or do you want to keep it forever? Do you have a problem with DRM'd formats? And like that...

I keep my books and don't seem to have DRM problems. I like to use my documents on m reader, but they never look as good as the Sony format.

Oh, ok. I see you have a Sony 500. I'm not familiar with that device - but your original question was "Is there a format that is considered best for all readers, with the clarity and flexibility of a proprietary one?" and the answer is "no". Every device does things differently. Therefore, there's really no "one size fits all" format.

HTML and RTF make good archival formats because you can usually make ebooks in any other format from those two. For reading it depends on your hardware.

Agreed. Store long-term in an open, flexible format. Convert to the "terminal format" used by your reading device for the optimum reading experience. If those two formats happen to be one and the same thing, you have the best of both worlds, of course!

Does anyone know of a conversion tool for the Sony format? To convert Sony to something else.
