Angry Cannot upgrade

I use linux, and usually upgdate by simply unzipping the new zip in the SD card of the DR. However, this time it is not working.

When I unzip the latest.zip in the SD card nothing happens. If I connect the DR again to my computer, and then disconnect, I get a pop-up which says that a new firmware has beeen detected, do I want to reboot. When I say yes the screen goes black and stays black. After about 10 minutes, I reset the DR. The software version is 1.02 so, 1.5 is not installed.

I tried doing the same on a fresh SD card. I formatted the card, and unzipped the latest zip file in the card. Again a black screen and the reader is still at version 1.02.

Any suggestions on what else I can try?

Thanks
Adi

I tried to upgrade using a Windows PC. Installed the updated companion software and used the companion software to upgrade the firmware of the DR. Now the DR is just continuously rebooting for the last hour. It boots up, a black screen comes, and it restarts from scratch.

Has anyone else experienced this behaviour before?

No Luck for me either!

When the companion software failed to find the update I attempted to update the firmware (under WinXP) manually. The device indicated that it was updating then died. Now it will no longer complete booting. I have posted a support request I will let you know what I find out.

Adi, the borked Windows update may be due to the previous Linux attempt.

One fairly obvious possibility for your problem may be that the manual install (in Linux) failed because the required files were not extracted into the correct directory structure (depending on the decompression software used)

Make sure it is on the SD card in /System/upgrade/ Note the lowercase folder name. If there is already something similar in System, delete it and copy a freshly extracted copy of the "upgrade" folder over (using a card reader if the DR1000 keeps hanging)

Do a cold boot / reset to make sure it starts from scratch. Good luck!

I download the file and unzip to SD card. Then the iRex repeatly rebooting as yours.
Then I just reset it and everything is OK.

Success after a clean install.

I removed the SD card from the device and directly attached it to my PC. After backing up the card I removed everything and copied the files from Latest.zip. This time the update was successful. I must not have copied the files correctly the first time.

Still no luck for me. I took a fresh SD card, unzipped the card restore zip from irex and booted. The DR boots correctly. So the device isn't broken.

I tried to upgrade using Windows. The companion software installs the new version, but when the DR reboots, the screen goes blank again.

The only other things that I can think of is that at some stage I installed the content browser by Adam. Can it in any way interfere with the upgrade process? If so, how can I delete it (I have reformatted the card)

Failing that, is there some way to do a "factory restore" for the device?

I was using the updated content browser and upgraded from linux without a problem. The content browser doesn't have any effect on the update process, because that is checked before the OS has started.

Try to download a different version of the firmware from here: http://updates.irexnet.com/embedded/dr1000/

Format the SD card, extract the files, insert, and press the reset button on the device. This should update your device no matter what state it's in.

Something really strange is happening.

I tried both 1.5 and 1.00 versions from the Irex website. Formatted the SD card, unzip the files in card, inserted the card in the DR, and press reset.

Upon reset, the DR asks me what language I want and does a calibration. But when I go to settings -> about, it still says that the software version is 1.02!!

But did you check in the About window if it was actually updated successfully to 1.5?

Did you see the "Installing/Updating" page in several languages when you first turned it on? If it reboots AFTER this screen, it should have installed whatever firmware you choose. If it simply rebooted and gives you the above dialogue, nothing got installed.

The only thing I can think of is the most stripped down manual install possible:

1) With the DR1000 off, remove the SD card. Start DR1000. You will only see "Settings". In Settings:
a) Check the current version in the "About" window.
b) Oops, No way to reset to factory defaults, since that seems to be only applicable to an inserted SD card...
Turn off DR1000

2) On your computer, using a cardreader:
a) Format card
b) create a folder "System" at the root /
c) Extract latest.zip or dr1000-1.5-build1500.zip (same) from iRex firmware repository
d) Copy ONLY the "update" folder over into "System". This folder should contain:
- kernel.bin
- micro.bin
- redboot.bin
- rootfs.bin
- update.dat
Nothing else!!

3) Insert SD card into DR1000 and turn on. You should see after a short delay the specific update screen informing you about just that, in 4 languages. After a while it will reboot. Now you should be able to go to Settings/About and see the new version info. (Visually you should be able to immediately tell from the empty slots on the left side of the toolbar)

If it worked, you can now add/replace the remaining content on the SD card.

If that doesn't help, I can't think of anything else...

Thank you for the detailed instructions. I followed them exactly, but when I start the DR, I do not get any update screen. I just starts as normal, and the software version is still 1.02.

The only other thing that I can try is doing this with a new SD card. Although I cannot imagine what difference that will make

Check the ini files that you have (DR1000.ini) in the system directory If it is reporting the older version, rename it to something else & try again. Occasionally it fails to get updated correctly. It should after a successful upgrade look similar to:

I followed allovertheglobe's instructions, and the System folder does not contain any DR1000.ini file

This is the output of ls -lR on the card

Code:

./System:

I will try to setup the card for the reader and test again.

It seems that you have a completely empty card, only the update files are copied. See the iRex site on how to make an empty card compatible with the DR1000:
http://support.irexnet.com/index.php...id=70&nav=0,19

So copy the content as indicated in the link above and then add the update directory.

There is also a topic on updating, see full list at: http://support.irexnet.com/index.php...oryid=19&nav=0

Hope this helps.
