boox palma w/ broken screen, want to backup my data. help appreciated
hi
i dropped my boox palma from bed the other day and the display is now frozen/cracked (internally—the surface is still intact) im not sure if the touch screen works. the buttons do. it is recognized by my computer (prompt to connect 'onyx bengal') but i cant access the storage. i followed some advice from this thread and put it in recovery mode. adb now recognizes it, albeit as 'unauthorized'. my sole focus is preserving my data so that's where i paused, as i didnt want to blindly navigate recovery mode unless i was sure of what i was pressing. (esp since that OP was looking to wipe his data) scrcpy --otg works, but not scrcpy by itself ('could not find any adb device') i tried [tab, enter, tab, tab, enter] to enable usb debugging but it didn't work. i dont have a pin turned on which may be why? or perhaps it *is* enabled but i just need to click OK on a dialog i cant see? im quite sure developer mode is on. im on a mac w/ a windows vm running in parallels. i dl'd usblog and usbview from the other thread so lmk if more info is needed any help is much appreciated thanks~ Last edited by k_o; 09-03-2025 at 06:03 PM. |

Yeah, you really need to get ADB turned on.
srccpy -otg is no different than plugging in a keyboard/mouse. (My) AdbGrab.exe or srccpy will only work with running ADB. I have a custom recovery for the Palma2. I could probably knock off a custom recovery for the Palma1 in a finite amount of time. But that won't get you your data. Your touch screen probably still works. If you can get somebody to figure out the magic button silliness to turn on "Narrator" for the blind. That is, if it supports Narrator. I don't believe that any Onyx have video out over USB Type C. |

ok i bought a palma 2 so i can figure out the right buttons and taps to either turn on narrator or enable usb debugging or some other third option. going to mess around later with it.
the older firmware and custom default launcher on my og palma may complicate things. i also forgot about the android 11-13 jump when considering unknown variables any ideas or tips are appreciated hahah i also have a usb c keyboard i can hook up to it. that'd prolly make headless control easier if it works |

Is there any way to position the two units so that you can plug in the good display into the old Palma without removing the screen?

dont think so since there are no visible screws. i think the only way to disassemble is by removing the glued-in screen
i accidentally put it into edl mode (0x9008) the other day which got me researching that as a viable data recovery path. if i dump the userdata partition (which i assume exists, i tried using cli tool edl to check but couldn't get past 'device detected ![]() to expand on edl attempt: i tried 'printgpt' alone first (which i figure is a low-risk read cmd) but i was still stuck at 'device detected'. so i tried again, loading '0014d0e100000000_d40eee56f3194665_FHPRG.bin', but it was still stuck. i figured i should pause there so i didnt brick it, since loading usually implies writing but i did find 2 other loaders in my research i could try, if there is no harm in it: 0000000000000000_bdaf51b59ba21d8a_fhprg.bin Qualcomm_662_loader.elf that said if a loader is *not* necessary to run 'printgpt' then i'll continue to troubleshoot edl itself first |

You could try a usb c (or adapter to c) mouse and follow the exact movements as on the working unit. That works on other devices.

No, you need a loader to use EDL.
EDL can only get you the encrypted data off the flash. It knows nothing about encryption. Encrypted data gets you nothing because it has to be decrypted by a normal system. You really want to enable MTP or ADB. |

wow, by some literal miracle i restarted it and the screen refreshed. it worked just long enough to enable usb debugging and now it shows up in adb (albeit as 'unauthorized'?)

wahhhh i figured it out!! omg !
i could cry so earlier when you mentioned taking it apart, i dug my nail in the crease around the screen to see if i could gently unglue it. this did something where now, if i press on the corner i dug my nail into a little, it refreshes and the touch screen works again for a moment i did this again to authorize my laptop and now i can see my file system in finder ^_^ (using macdroid) thanks for your help really happy rn also @lese thanks for your idea as well. had this not worked i was going to try it next Last edited by k_o; 10-10-2025 at 10:19 AM. |
