BOOX Go 7 : Which version has better contrast White or Black ?

Hello everyone,

I'm reaching out with a question — I'm interested in purchasing the "BOOX GO 7" model, but I'm unsure which version to choose.
What matters most to me is better contrast and sharper text.

By the way, the black version of the Leaf 2 had a yellowish border around the edges after a few months. What about GO 7?

I read on some forums that the black version actually has better contrast, which confused me a bit since in the case of the LEAF 2 it was the other way around and the white version had better contrast. Does anyone have experience with these devices or could offer any advice or share any insights?

According to the video, he measured better contrast on the white model. I suspect the black border might create an optical illusion that's interpreted as better contrast, which is why some users might think that the black model has deeper blacks.

I'm not sure his method produces good results, but I haven't seen any better comparison either.

My Go 7 has slightly less sharp text and worse contrast than my Libra 2. It hasn't yellowed yet, but it's too early to tell. I had a white Leaf 2, which had the sharpest screen I've seen on a modern e-reader, but unfortunately it did turn yellow around the edges like your black version.

I'm a bit confused by these two screen types. The contrast on the LEAF 2 (white) version was significantly better than the black version of the LEAF 2, how is it possible that it's the other way around now?

According to the review and comparison (see link), the black version with glass gives better results in terms of contrast and legibility of the text.
(At least that's what I understood in that video)



So your opinion (and based on your experience) is that the white version with a plastic surface should be more noticeable with better contrast?

What variant of your Go 7 do you have? I would like to achieve the exact screen quality of the KOBO LIBRA.

I would just add that I read mostly at home and rarely use dark mode.

PS: As for color perception, it has happened to me that I used "white" or "black" adhesive tape and the device changed color

I have the white model and it's not quite as good as the Libra 2. So maybe get the black model and return it if it isn't up to par?

Hi Kandwo

We had a quick opportunity to "touch" both variants of the BOOX Go 7 device, both in black and white, and I chose the black version.

Unfortunately, the white model "BOOX Go 7" does not have as good contrast as the white model Boox Leaf 2, where the white version with a recessed screen achieved about the same good contrast and sharpness of the text as the KOBO Libra2.

I also noticed that the white and black models do not have identical buttons, whereas on the White version, they sometimes get stuck when you press the wrong button.

Aesthetically, I liked the white version better, but the "front edge light glow" is too pronounced and I would probably regret this choice over time.

Conclusion: If you are in a situation like me and are thinking about buying the Boox Go 7 and prefer better contrast and readability, I would recommend the black version, for your reference, the quality and contrast is very similar to the latest version of the Kindle Paperwhite, which is very corectly.

PS: Regarding the black and white dilemma, I used white tape for the test, so I have a white model from the black model, but without the light of God around the edges

That's interesting!

Unfortunately, it seems like the white models by Boox are somewhat of an afterthought. They tend to be worse than their black counterparts.

I have both Palmas, for instance, and the black one is much better. The volume/page turn buttons on the white version are mushy, and the lower button is softer than the upper one. The screen also scratched really easily. The black version has great clicky buttons and a much better screen.

And now people report that the white Go 7 has bad buttons (again!) and problems with the frontlight.

Luckily, I don't have the issue of the page turn buttons getting stuck on my unit. And I don't use the frontlight at all. I only use a frontlight on my readers in bed and there I use either my Palma or Libra 2.

The exceptions to the rule are the devices that only come in white/light gray: the Go 10.3 and Note Max. Of course, the latter suffers from way too much ghosting, which they still haven't fixed for whatever reason. I wish they would focus slightly less on pumping out new devices and fixing the software issues on the current ones.

I just quickly covered the black version of the Go7 with white tape for comparison with the "white" version and the effect on the contrast was negligible.

PS: I applied the tape a bit hastily, especially around the buttons, so it looks a bit sloppy



I was surprised by the very good contrast and sharpness of the text when I compared the “black Go 7” and the latest version of the “Kindle WhitePaper” (with the same E-INK 1300 screen) side by side, the black version of the Go 7 has slightly better contrast, both in text and when browsing manga, for example.
