Pocketbook Era

How well does it integrate with Calibre compared to Kobo? Sadly Kobo has no 7″ mono model now.

Strange description on Amazon Ireland:

About this item
Ultra-thin – the household scales find space in every drawer due to its flat design. The scale automatically shuts off when not in use.
PB700-U-16-WW
Accurate measurement: the digital minte kitchen scale shows the weight accurately. Measured in grams, ounces, pounds and millilitres with tare function.
Tare function – with the practical tare function, the weight of the container in which you weigh the ingredients is removed. In this simple way, accurate weighing is possible.
Pretty design – weighing ingredients is fun with the scales. The pastel flat design will look great in any kitchen.
Does the "Back" button work in an ebook to return to location before a link tap? In the shop it took me back to Library.

Hey there! I have a PocketBook Era, so hopefully I can help.

I use Calibre to send books to my device, and it works great for that. I plug the Era into my computer, Calibre sees it, tells me which books are on the device, and I can send books by clicking the "Send to Device" button. It is pretty seamless.

The Era shows up like a flash drive would with the OS, so you can just drag books onto it too.

I use KOReader on it, but I just played the stock reading software, and clicking the back button does not return to your previous position when clicking a link. However, when you click a link, a little box pops up in the bottom left corner with an arrow and the page number you were last on. If you tap the box, it will jump back to where you were.

And that is neat that you can use it to measure things like a scale. I have not tried that feature .

I can do that with Kindle & Sony too. However what metadata is supported?

I tried KOReader, but it has almost zero metadata support. It uses files, like a regular program. I get Subtitle, Blurb, Series and collections with Kobo. The Library interface and search far superior to Kindle. The Sony has just title, author and collections.

Calibre supports collections on PocketBooks through a plugin here. It looks like series can be done natively on the device along with authors, genres, favorites, and formats.

In terms of subtitle and blurb, I am not seeing that on the device itself. It might have that functionality, but I have never tried to use it, so I am not sure.

As for KOReader, there is a Calibre plugin called koreader-calibre-plugin) that synchronizes metadata between Calibre and KOReader. I have not used this feature myself, but KOReader has collections (see the user guide here), and it has Calibre metadata search built in.

Yes, KOReader can use search on Calibre data, but it's awkward. It's a file based browser. It's really for people that want to over-ride the CSS. I fix ebooks in Calibre if they are that broken, I have used KOReader search, and I've installed KOReader in the past on Android and Kobo.

I'm only interested in what the Pocketbook does, not KOReader.

It is a simple device. If your ereader keeps working after, you know the thing you put on top is light. If the screen breaks, you know it is heavy.

I just received my Pocketbook Era, and I run Calibre on Linux Mint. I have no books with subtitle. I also embed all metadata into the books using Calibre (EPUB & PDF).

Plugged it in, created a Books folder in the Internal Storage (I use a custom save path).
Started Calibre, immediately detects the device (under a wrong model name though), marked ~1200 EPUB & PDF books, hit "Send to device". All good and in the correct folders.

The native app seems to support (at least):
  • Author
  • Title
  • Series (name and number in series) [hooray! missed that on my Tolino Vision 5!]
  • Blurb
  • Genre(s) [from Calibre Tags]

If you "jump around" in a book (via link, footnote, etc.), a "previous page number" indicator appears in the lower left, and an extra "back" button. Seems reliable so far. The top left touch area/back button always moves you to the home/library.

Here’s a screenshot of the book info it displays:
