Sigil 2.5.2 is primarily a bugfix release.

Bug Fixes

• fix missing python function replace "file_name" in DryRun and Filter Replacements
• fix CV to Preview syncing to self-closing tags that are bare in body
• workaround recent Qt changes by making PV sync to top when code in CV is not well formed

And fwiw, this will be the very last fast follow-on bugfix release for the foreseeable future. This release fixes all reported regressions when compared to the Sigil 2.4.2 release and even adds a workaround to help prevent users from missing Preview error messages that was caused by internal Qt changes since Qt 6.7.3.

Unless a new critical bug is reported, this release should hopefully last the normal 3 or 4 months (given our release schedule of 3 to 4 stable releases per year).

Thanks to everyone who has pointed out a regression or other bug for fixing. If only we could get bug reports for Beta builds like we do around official releases, life would be golden. But the scale of Sigil tools and gui, and the unique idiosyncratic way users use Sigil makes normal regression testing ineffective.

This post is not directly related to the new release (I have yet to install the update), but I wanted to write a few words and say thank you to those who maintain and contribute to Sigil. I hope it's ok to do it here rather than starting a separate thread.

I published my first e-book (EPUB 3) last year with the help of Sigil. I experienced a couple of issues/bugs, which were later fixed by the developers. If Sigil was a paid application, I would say that the support is great. But it's free, and the developers don't even accept donations. The support and dedication of Sigil's highly knowledgeable developers is simply outstanding! I and other users should consider ourselves very lucky to be able to use a free program that is so well developed and maintained by DiapDealer and KevinH, with help from BeckyEbook and others.

If a user has a feature request or report a potential issue, the developers seem quick to reply. Even if they think that a specific problem is user error or caused by a poorly-coded imported file, they still investigate it. And yes, if someone has a "silly" feature request or complains about an issue that is clearly user error, the developers will give it to him/her straight That's fine.

If a genuine bug is found, the developers dig deeper and fix it. Even if it's not technically a bug, they sometimes spend a lot of time looking for ways to improve Sigil, so that we end up with software that is more robust and feature-rich. I'm seriously impressed, because I know that this can be very time-consuming work. Even checking this forum and replying to users must take a lot of time. From what I've seen, the developers really go above and beyond!

My background and experience with Sigil

I have published many books (popular science) in the last 20 years. Several of them have been self-published. For personal reasons I'm no longer able to handle the workload and logistics of paper books. My recent book has therefore been published as an e-book using Sigil. As expected, the sales figure is pathetic compared to the previous paper editions, but this has nothing to do with Sigil.

I have basic HTML and coding skills, and since I read the manual several times before even installing Sigil, I didn't have too much trouble producing the e-book. I tried keeping it simple. I added basic formatting and more than 200 images plus quite a few lists and a few tables. Because I want users to be able to read the book on their smartphone, I reduced the number of tables – and the number of columns in them – to an absolute minimum. On an iPad Mini, the total number of pages is 400–500 (depending on the font size). Luckily, I had no problem getting my file validated with the EpubCheck plugin. Thank you, Doitsu, for the plugin!

Two minor annoyances are 1) that all undo history is lost after saving, and 2) very high memory/RAM use after minimizing Sigil to the Dock and restoring it on my Intel 5K iMac (approaching 9 GB with a small file containing only a few lines of text). Both have been discussed in the forum, and I can certainly live with these minor issues.

Sigil does everything I need – and a heck of a lot more. Thanks again to all developers and contributors!

You're welcome. But Kevin gets all the credit for the fix. I just pushed a few buttons; copy/pasted some text, and made a new release.

Found a great howto for creating the Desktop file

Especially the

command. This makes it so much easier to create the Desktop file. I can't get the Sigil icon to show, but I can live with that. I'm just so grateful to be able to run Sigil and Page Edit in Ubuntu, rather then faff around in Windows.

As I've already mentioned, the rearnotes semantic has been deprecated and should be replaced with endnotes. W3C link.
You might want to add "Status: deprecated" to the rearnotes definition and add endnotes to the list of semantics.
I asked BeckyEbook about this and she said she'd be willing to prepare a patch for this, if you accepted her pull request.

I'd really appreciate it, if you added this fix to Sigil 2.5.3 once you guys have figured out what causes the crash reported by mrprobert.

I have that on my to-do agenda, but since that would necessitate new translations strings, that means a trip through Transifex and at least 1 week or more waiting to give all translation teams (there are around 20 active teams/people working on Sigil) enough time to translate the new strings plus the build an release time.

Thus that change is not consistent with a bug fix fast follow-up release we were trying for. I purposely decided to hold off on it since it is just a deprecation, and only a recent one from March of this year.

All of that said a PR from BeckyEbook would be wonderful.

IIRC, someone requested changes to the spellcheck dialog box. These changes now make it impossible to resize the Word column because the column resizing cursor, which looks somewhat like this ←║║→ is no longer shown when I hover the cursor over the vertical divider bar between the word and count columns.
(The only way to resize the Word column is to resize the dialog box.)

The word column is auto-sized to match the longest word. Does resizing the dialog only shrink the Word column? If so, is that enough? What does spellchecking the long word first?
