Sigil downloads page out of date
A new user brought to my attention that the advice I'd given them to download the CHECKSUM.sha256.txt file in order to be able to check their Sigil download's integrity was not correct.
When I check on the https://sigil-ebook.com/sigil/download page, there is a mention of the checksum file but no link. Of course, the download buttons initiate the downloads from github website but the viewer never actually loads a github releases page. There is a link, "releases", which takes us to https://github.com/Sigil-Ebook/Sigil/releases and there alongside each of the latest releases is a button to copy its sha256 checksum. It would be good to have same or similar on the sigil-ebook.com website since this is the more public facing page. Scrolling further down the sigil-ebook.com/sigil/downloads page to the section "Sigil on Linux", it would be good to give pride of place to a mention of the new AppImage instead of promoting flatpack which has not been very responsive recently. We gave up manually creating the checksum file because GitHub now creates sha256 checksums for all assets uploaded to releases automatically (as you noticed). I purposely removed the latest checksum file link from the website since it would result in a broken link anyway.
I'm not going to try and duplicate what GitHub is doing with the button to copy the sha256sum, because I frankly don't think it's possible--at least not in an automated way that I won't have to manually fuss with for each and every new release. If I find a way to automatically pull the checksum from GitHub, I may consider adding it to individual releases, but I doubt it will ever be part of the Latest Downloads Page again. In the meanwhile, I will remove the reference to the CHECKSUM.sha256.txt file from the website (since it's not going to be a part of our releases anymore) and recommend they go to the GitHub release page to get a sha256 checksum if they so desire. Much like the user guides, user contributions are appreciated for the website. The Sigil/PageEdit website is actually automatically generated from markup stored in a github repository. Folks who want to see changes to the website should consider creating a pull request to help out. The repo that hosts the website's content is: https://github.com/Sigil-Ebook/sigil-ebook.github.io The markup file that is used to specifically create the https://sigil-ebook.com/sigil/downloads page is: https://github.com/Sigil-Ebook/sigil...oad.md?plain=1 Last edited by DiapDealer; 06-09-2025 at 05:34 PM. |

I have updated the Sigil and PageEdit download pages to have links in the checksum section that will always point to the very latest GitHub release. That's about the best I can do right now.

I'll point other authors to both the Sigil download page and the Github releases page, depending on whether they wish to bother with checksum verification. Glad to see the mention of the AppImage in the Linux section. Even though you taught me to build my own from source, for which I'm really grateful, it's incredibly faster just to download a new AppImage, make it executable and change the icon link in the launcher. ![]() |
