How does Calibre use the word "The" in title sort?
When I sort by title I sometimes get this result (see attached). It ignores the word "The" and puts the book in the "A" section of the sort. Just looking for consistency.

It puts it after the title. "The Story Of All of Us" would be sorted "Story Of All Of Us, The". You would have to go into the metadata to force The into the front. If it's not sorting right, open the metadata and click the arrow to sort and it will correct the sort.

"Library Order" or "Strictly Alphabetic
There is a Tweak within Preferences > Tweaks to set the title sort to either use "Library Order" or "Strictly Alphabetic". Simply change your Tweak to whichever your prefer, then run Bulk Metadata Edit to "Update Title Sorts" for all books.
That Tweak is Global within Calibre. To make it a per-Library choice, use the Job Spy plug-in's GUI tool to do so. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...42118#poststop DaltonST Last edited by DaltonST; 02-21-2019 at 02:30 PM. |

Is there a way to create a catalog csv file where the titles and author sort info matches our regular output settings? I have my settings for saving books where it puts the prefix (The, A, An, etc) at the end of the title and my Author Sort saves as first name last name.. however, when I create a catalog file, it saves the info with the prefix before the title, and author name is last, first How can we get the catalog to match our desired file name/structure?

Ok I have the authors and titles fixed, but it seems that there is no series_sort option available in the csv/xml options.. that is the only other place where it is still putting series in as The Accidental Demon Slayer Series instead of Accidental Demon Slayer Series, The

I have set title_series_sorting = u'strictly_alphabetic'
But it has no effect. I am running Release: 4.2 (64 bit version) on Windows 19 Pro X64. |

Title has a tick box o the Bulk Metadata edit to (re)compute the sort value for the group of selected books, but the only way I know, is to make any change to the value |

WHERE are you seeing the 'wrong' sort? I ask because there are MANY tweaks that affect sorts. Some of those are aimed at the Devices (first time) copy. Some, by language of the UI. Some by {language} (set for the book, which may be different than the actual contents of your copy. There is a fast look to see if what was entered (unsorted): Manage series: Type "the" into the filter: do the entries ALL look correct? (not GIGO) |

Am I doing something wrong? Want to do the same as I found in this tread but after I edit the line to change to strickly_alphabetic the apply tag doesn't change for me to apply the change.

You now need to force Calibre to recalculate the updated preference. In your case: Title select all books (with the problem otherwise Calibre will update last_modified for all books, which affects Incremental backups). tap 'E" (bulk mode metadata edit): Tick the box Update Title Sort: OK ![]() ![]() |

Bit of thread necromancy...
I understand how the tweak works. That part is clear, no need to explain it again. What I would like to know is... Is there a way to sort the display by the "Title" field instead of the "Title sort" field? I don't want to update the "Title sort" of my entire library (in part because it would change the "last modified" field too, which is useful to me in some contexts). |

Create a composite column and sort on it
Added: But that'll barrel through every book and reset it's modified date. There a backup/restore Last modified option in the Job Spy plugin. There's also a Last Modified plugin, which may be a better solution for you ==>> Index of plugins. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 04-19-2025 at 09:24 PM. |
