paperwhite 10th 5.16.8 firmware jb issue

Hello friends. Kindlemodding.org says that modding can be done with Winterbreak for Kindle Paperwhite 10th (5.16.8 firmware). I followed the instructions exactly but I couldn't jailbreak it. Can you help me? Thanks.

I am in the same boat as you my friend.

PW4 with FW 5.16.8
Multiple tries using Winterbreak v1.7.0, v1.6.0, and v1.4.0
Loading files on root including hidden files before registering device.
Registering as fast as possible to turn on airplane mode.
Soon as it tries to load the store the wifi flickers and gets unexpected error.
Have tried with and without deleting update.bin.tmp.partial that gets generated as soon as device is registered.

Have factory reset multiple times with DO_FACTORY_RESET and repeated the process to no avail.

Haven't tried finding a update >5.16.8 and <5.18.1 and manually updating FW and trying again.

Same here, I have manual updated every FM update all the way to 5.17.1.0.3.
All give unexpected error loading the store. All following the instruction to get past the error. Mesquito just wont run.

All I can say is that I have two PW4 (10 generation). I jailbroke both of them following the instructions (5.16.8 and 5.17.1.0.3) and both them are now jailbroken. Since I had two of them, I updated 1 to 5.18.1, reinstalled the latest hotfix/KUAL/MRPI and the jailbreak had survived.

Hello. Can you tell me how you did the jailbreak process step by step? Despite trying many times, the result is disappointing...

I literally followed the step by step procedure from the Kindle Modding Wiki for WinterBreak. The only item not mentioned that I did was to check each time to make sure no update files had been downloaded before ejecting my PW4 and if one was found to delete it. More important now that 5.18.1 has been released.

I use 7-Zip to extract the WinterBreak.tar.gz file by digging down to the level where the files show and then copying them to a directory (oddly called WinterBreak, let no one accuse me of originality

) on my desktop. I enabled airplane mode and rebooted my PW4 and then copied the contents of the WinterBreak directory to the root of the Kindle's exposed storage. Safely ejected the PW4 and then opened the Kindle Store turning off airplane mode when requested. The WinterBreak icon showed up and I tapped on it.

Followed the next steps copying the update_hotfix_universal.bin to the root of the Kindle storage, installing it and running the hotfix booklet.

Next was downloading the kindlehf versions of MRPI and KUAL and following the directions to install them.

Downloaded the kindlehf version of KOReader and used ;log mrpi to install it.

Repeated the procedure on my second PW4.

Thank you, but I did not get any results despite following the steps on the kindle modding site many times. As a last resort, I threw the device away :-(

Other than my 2 PW4s, the only person I personally helped with jailbreaking their Kindle ran into the issue that he had not registered the Kindle after purchasing it used. When we attempted to register it, it was blacklisted. Contacting the vendor, he had picked it up at a unclaimed lost and found sale so the original owner likely reported it as lost or stolen.

After resetting the Kindle, I can easily log in to the system with my Amazon account and the device registered message appears on the screen. In other words, there is no problem with the registration of my device.

I am hoping there is an update to the winterbreak, I have had to go back to vanilla kindle and its really poor, I have been spoiled with Koreader.

I have 10th gen PW running FW 5.18.1

I also have a 10th gen PW and was considering doing this. But, my question is about KOReader, as far as the "library" part of it. I've seen a few videos showing off the interface, but they never say anything about the actual use. Is it able to make collections? Does it keep track of which books you've read and let you filter them out? Things like that...
