manual update

Hello Everyone,

I'm using calibre since years and I have a question since the beginning.

I always used the distrubution package because I never undestood how to manually update the binaries installation in linux.

I'm a bit tired of the always old distro packages

so could you pls help me to understand how to update after install with this command: sudo -v && wget -nv -O- https://download.calibre-ebook.com/linux-installer.sh | sudo sh /dev/stdin install_dir=/opt ?

thanks,
bye,

Alex

You just run the exact same command. As simple as that.

Many thanks,

so every file and directory that needs to be added and overwritten will be ?
and also deleted ?
and the database structure of all the libraries I have ?
if the new version of the software use a different schema in the *db files ?
like bigger field, or new fields ?
how do I add them to the mine ?
Thanks,
Bye,

Alex

calibre will handle any database changes it needs to make.

thanks a lot both,
and sorry if I'm still asking, but I tried by myself searching over the files and the internet but haven't understood.
could you pls be more specific ?
I have 10 libraries with their respective metadata.db file in different root folders.
I created them with Calibre 7.2.1.
Now I'd like to update to calibre 8.2.1
I checked and I haven't found in the metadata.db files any reference to version 7.2.1.
Is the DB structure always the same in each calibre version ?
Meaning that if I update the client the structure would be fully compatible ?
or the first time I'll start the new version of the application and open the 7.2.1 metadata.db it will recognize the old version (somehow I haven't found) and update its structure to 8.2.1 ?
Thanks,
Bye,

Alex

calibre will take care of any database changes that need to be made. This will be done in the background and does not require you to take any actions. As for the database version, the only items I've noticed are in the database properties where the schema version changes between calibre versions and the user version which does not seem to change in the databases backups I've checked.

It takes care of the DB updates
Just be aware that those Libraries are not directly backwards compatible,
So if you must (because the OS on another PC can't run current Calibre), make sure you have the latest Library on the older PC before you update, because further adds are less simple.

ok thanks I got it will take care,
just wondering about technical details beyond this magic.
anyway I trust sqldiff that found 0 differences between empty metadata 7.2.1 and empty metadata 8.2.1 apart the libraryID,
so I think no DB schema update in the new version.
If someone has more technical details still appreciated.
thanks
