Disaffected Scribe Jailbreaker.
Hi,
Could someone please help? I would like to know how to install custom screensavers WHILE KEEPING the markup ability of a pdf. I've looked at a few tutorials and if they're not ancient, they mention using EPUB which I think isn't markable the way a PDF is. So how would I maintain the ability to mark a PDF while having a custom screensaver? And how do I address my almost unsable KOReader, which is glacial in opening. And what does it have that a Scribe owner will find useful/beneficial (not font customization)? Thank you. |

I think you're confused on what does what.
Custom screensavers has nothing at all to do with marking up a PDF. Where are you reading that it will effect it in any way? KOReader is quick on my Scribe. What version did you install? What firmware version is your Scribe running? Have you loaded a lot of fresh Kindle-format content on your Scribe? Indexing it is a well known thing that eats up CPU time and battery power. KOReader is highly configurable, but if the stock Kindle interface does what you want then the primary feature is that it reads EPUB. Font customization has nothing to do with the jailbreak either, if that was a motivation to try KOReader. It's been a feature of the stock firmware since 5.9.6 back ca. 2018. |

The problem with custom screensavers in the native GUI (i.e. not in KOReader) is that tampering with them is risky; if you put your own files in the /usr/share/blanket/screensavers folder (which is where the screensavers are stored) and the files are not in the correct format, your Kindle might refuse to boot.
This was all properly handled in the past by NiLuJe’s Screensavers Hack, but this hack doesn’t work on firmware versions higher than 5.16.2.1.1. Now, not all is lost, as there is a tool to convert images to a compatible format, but this format varies across Kindle models, and there is no automatic check that your converted files will work on your specific Kindle. If you’re willing to get down to the nitty gritty of finding out the correct format, converting your images and uploading them to your Kindle via ssh, there is a thread on Discord with a lot of information on the topic; you can find it here: https://discord.com/channels/1083603...89065998585897 Last edited by BionicGecko; 02-26-2025 at 12:40 AM. |

@maakies, a relevant thread was just revived in a very timely way in the Developer’s Corner, with concrete info on the file format requirements for custom screensavers on the Scribe.
You can find it here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=358365 |
