Transferring books - I have Oasis, might buy a Kobo
So a simple enough question, I think.
If you buy books from Amazon, can you later somehow get them on to your Kobo, or some other epub device? Amazon is offering me a free trial period for Kindle Unlimited. My thought was to stock up with as many books as I can during the trial period, then cancel. However, given the issues with my Oasis, I might very well buy a Kobo Sage in the foreseeable future. My present understanding is that you purchase the books with your computer and Amazon sends them right to your kindle. I I don't have a way of getting them on to my computer. They will all be useless once I get an epub devices since I can't send anything out from a reader. Do I have this right? |

With Kindle Unlimited you are borrowing the books not purchasing them. So it would be unethical to keep them, regardless of device.

It's possible to remove the DRM from Kindle books and convert them to epub. I buy from Amazon all the time and read on my Kobos.
But I doubt folks here are going to offer help with deDRMing Kindle Unlimited books. As the previous poster said, they're loans, not purchases. |

For the record, I'm not interested in stealing borrowed books at all. I haven't bought books in decades. I used to have tons of books back in the day. I lost them all through theft and moving long distances more times than I can count. Our state libraries have all gone to cloudlibrary, so I think the best thing I can do is to get a Kobo once I read all the books that are still on my kindle. My ex gave me her Oasis and she put a bunch of books from her cloud on there for me (legitimately purchased). Once those are gone, that's it except for gutenberg, so I think a Kobo makes the most sense for me unless I purchase a library card from somewhere that has a fantastic selection of ebooks. I haven't found that yet. Anyway, that's a lot of words to say, "Sorry, wasn't thinking..." |

I don’t have Kindle Unlimited anymore because I wasn’t using it enough to be worthwhile. However, I think I read that Amazon removed the “Download and Transfer “ option from Kindle Unlimited books anyway. That’s the only way I know how to liberate Kindle books.

Amazon US does not have a problem. So if the OP lives in the UK, there is no getting new eBooks from Amazon ATM. This is why (IMHO) it should be mandatory to put in where you live so questions that rely on a region can be answered properly. Last edited by JSWolf; 01-09-2025 at 12:49 PM. |

No there isn't when you cannot see newly purchased eBooks. I tried to download an eBook I bought (free) the other day from Amazon UK that my Kindle has never seen. So I don't see how to download eBooks form Amazon when something is broken.
I just tried Amazon US and it's broken the same as Amazon UK. So as of now, there's no way to get new Kindle eBooks from the US or UK. So if you get a KU deal, you won't be able to take advantage of it until Amazon fixes what is broken. |
