disappearing space before <em>

Sigil is collapsing spaces that appear before <em> tags in my kobo epub books. So for instance, if the line is "this is <em>fantastic</em>" the result will read as "this isfantastic" (with fantastic in ital). Is this a known problem? Is there a quick fix?

I haven’t seen that behavior at all… unless it is something that I do unintentionally when performing a find/replace, or something.

Can you show a copy/paste of a before and after from the actual codeview showing a problem area? There may be something wierd with the kobo and the <span>s that it puts around everything.

Are you seeing this within Sigil itself, or are you by chance using the KePub Output Plugin for Calibre to load your books onto your Kobo? There's a known issue that removed the spaces like that, and the solution is to downgrade to v3.7.0. See here for more details.

Ah... you've both put your finger on an important distinction I'd not noticed. In the code, all looks normal, and in Sigil's preview, all looks normal. The space disappears in the Kobo, though. So, then, not a Sigil issue, but one for the Kobo (or, rather, for Calibre).

Vanguard, to answer your question, I am using Calibre, and I think I do have that plug-in. I will follow your link and investigate via that route.

Thank you both for the answers!

Sigil is not removing any spaces. The problem is that you have converted your ePub to KePub using a version of KePub Output that does remove some spaces. You would need to install the latest version, delete the KePub, and convert your ePub to KePub. It would take a rather long time to find out which KePub have missing spaces so it's best to redo them all. It's more then just before italics. I cannot say where all the missing spaces are. This is why it's best to convert from ePub to KePub using the latest plugin.

Also, you'll want the latest version of KoboTouchExtended because an older version also had the same problem. So any KePub on your Kobo that you converted using KoboTouchExtended, you should resend to your Kobo from the source ePub. You won't know which KePub have missing spaces or not. So resend them all.

Remember, this has nothing to do with Sigil.

The solution is to upgrade to 3.7.3. 3.7.3 is 3.7.0 with a new version so calibre will see the new version and prompt for it to be installed. This goes for both KePub Output and KoboTouchExtended.

Ignore the advice to install 3.7.0 and install 3.7.3.

What you are seeing is the ePub displaying correctly and then the on the Kobo, the converted KePub showing problem because the version of KoboTouchExtended is an older buggy version. Once you upgrade to 3.7.3, you can resend your ePub to your Kobo and it will overwrite the existing KePub. So you'll keep any reading positions you have.

Happy to help. I keep track of the plug threads for all the plugins I use with calibre so I know what's going on.

And in general, if it shows properly in Preview, the problem is probably not in Sigil.

For sure, Kevin. My mistake (one of them) was posting here before I thought to check the preview output in Sigil. In the end, I'm glad I posted though, as it led me to the answer before I'd even finished my lunch.

Thanks much.
