I just acquired a 3rd edition kindle. It's a B008 model running 3.4 of the software.
It charges and holds a charge. (I haven't had it long enough to know how much or how long but it's in the hours). It will scan and associate with several wifi stations in my house. However, when I plug it in, (mac, linux, chromebook), it does not show up as a usb storage device as I was expecting in order to update the system software. While it will associate with my wifi stations, any attempt to actually USE the wifi, register, store, etc, all fail immediately with a notification that the wifi isn't working. (It works for other devices in my house). I was hoping to update the system software in hopes that that might fix the wifi problem but I don't see how. Any suggestions or advice? Or is this just a lost cause and my $10 at the estate sale along with it? |

Before and after you plug it in an USB port on linux
what does Code:
sudo dmesg | tail The results will let you know whether the kindle is detected and what it is detected as. For example, if it is jailbroken, it might be detected as an USB ethernet device, depending on whether USBnetworking was installed and what mode it is in. wifi is unlikely to works because of security settings. The store won't work even if you get wifi working. |

Then it did azw3. Likely WiFi would not have worked. There is a problem now registering older Kindles (I registered before that), that now they won't register on WiFi and you need either an SMS or email code added to either user or password (I forget which). It's best to already have an Amazon account, though using a gift card code for USA Marketplace used to work to create an account on the K3. Download from here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...MQC26VQQMM8XSW You'll find it hard to register and Customer Service may initially tell you that you can't. I've no idea if WiFi really works now, though it's used to set time & date if the battery goes flat. I've had to replace the LiPoly cell, which is easy on the KK3. Easier than DXG. Ironically now a nicer UI than the PW3. The store no longer works. But that was always madness compared to Win/Mac/Linux browser. Or even Android (some Android even 4.1 will let you save the Download Kindle file and copy to Kindle over USB). Last edited by Quoth; 11-21-2024 at 05:38 AM. |

Register your Kindle from the Kindle. When you get the code texted to your phone, go to register your Kindle again but instead of putting in your password, put in the code. That's what worked for me to get a Kindle Touch registered. |

here is a guide I found on reddit:
Step 1: Make sure your kindle's firmware is updated to the latest available. Go here to check the latest available version for your specific device. Note: This step is essential, as older kindles won't connect to wifi unless they are running the latest firmware. Step 2: Log in with your Amazon account as normal, for the purposes of this explanation, lets assume Tony is registering a kindle keyboard, he would then type his email and password, like so: Quote:
Step 3: This step varies depending on whether or not you have two factor authentication (2FA) on, in any case you WILL receive a six-digit one time passcode delivered to your account's associated mobile number. For the sake of this example let us assume the code is 654321. so, If you have 2FA ON: log in again, only this time do it adding the six digit code at the end of you password. Quote:

You are in, now restart your device. This is not strictly necessary but sometimes the kindle won't show your archive or download ebooks until being restarted. |
