Cannot add books not bought from Kindle Store

I have just bought another Kindle Paperwhite (2024) and want to add over 400 Kindle books which were not bought from the Kindle Store (they were bought from BookBuddies years ago and also a site which sold Author Collections).

I tried using "Add Books" on one of the books as a test. On my old Kindle, the book is a folder containing two files - an MBP1 file and an MBS file. When I try to add the book, I get the message "No items match your selection".

I've tried amending the Add Books using the dropdown menu next to it to add books from a folder. This makes no difference.

I'm not exactly technical and have no idea how to proceed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Geoff

Which version of calibre? I suspect only a very recent version will support 2024 Kindles, since they use a different file transfer mechanism.

Those are not book files.

The actual extensions for book files on the device will vary based on the model of your older Kindle. Some examples are .azw, .azw3, .kfx, .mobi, and .prc.

OK, so how do I find the actual book files on my old Kindle?

Look in the "documents" folder and its subfolders for those file types or allow calibre to search your Kindle for them by opening it while the device is connected via USB.

For your old Kindle, calibre will automatically detect the Kindle and the books on it. There will be a "device" in the main icon bar, IIRC.

I'm pretty sure there's an easy way to import from a connected device without having to find the books in the device's file system manually.

(Initially I thought you were only asking about how to go from calibre to your new Kindle. I didn't realise you wanted to import books from your old Kindle into calibre)
