Help! Boxes instead of letters

My husband has a Clara HD. He tried to sync it with his Mac today but it wasn't recognized (so he thought) and he unplugged it. Since then, he just sees blank square boxes instead of any letters or menu items.

We have tried factory reset, which resulted in the same boxes instead of letters. We tried copying the current firmware (4.38.21908). No luck.

(We factory reset by guessing the menu items comparing it to my Aura H2O; when that didn't work, we used the "manual factory reset" power button sequence)

Any other ideas that don't involve removing the back cover? Thanks!

That sounds to me like a missing or corrupted system font -- not sure how that could have happened though.

I tend to agree that that sounds like font issues. Can you try locating the languages menu and switching to another language?

A PM has been sent. I would recommend writing it to a new µSD card since a very common cause of issues is the µSD card failing.
