Kobo elipsa 2e without syncing - easy or pain?

I have a new Elipsa 2e. In general I prefer my devices to do a minimum of calling home, passing on my data etc. I manage my books in Calibre and sideload them to the device.

So, I am trying to set up the Kobo without syncing it (using a Linux laptop, so I also don't have Kobo Desktop). The first step seems to work fine, though taken from a random site:

In KoboReader.sqlite, INSERT INTO user(UserID,UserKey) VALUES('1','');

That lets me past several of the initialisation steps. The next problem is trying to set up a notebook: I get 'Sync required to download the required handwriting recognition resources'. Can I find these anywhere online?

And if I can find those, am I going to find I am continually fighting the software to carry on without syncing? Although my preference is not to, if I have to, I have to.

Thanks
Graham

You no longer need to edit the database. Connect over USB and edit .kobo/Kobo/Kobo eReader.conf. Find the [ApplicationPreferences] heading, or create it if it doesn't exist, and add SideloadedMode=true to enable sideload mode. Eject and reboot, and you'll be able to use the device without a Kobo account.

If you want dictionaries, you can sync or use this thread to download them directly:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=346645

I don't know if you can do the notebook setup without syncing, but syncing once for dictionaries and notebook setup shouldn't be a big deal. You can keep Wi-Fi off after that, if you want. You can get firmware updates over Wi-Fi or install them manually over USB.

Thanks Aleron - all seems fine now (I did need to sync once to get the notebooks working).

Now I'm a bit baffled by the UI, but that will have to be a separate thread...

Why bother buying the device if you are not going to allow it to work for you.

Reading sideloaded books is a perfectly valid use case of an ereader. That's what the sideloaded mode is for. I also sideload everything and never sync, although I haven't bothered to enable the sideloaded mode. Some prefer to download everything from the store, others don't. To each their own.

The best reasons to buy an ereader in order, IMO:
1) Reading PD ebooks. About 90% of my Calibre Library is PD titles. This was a pain for 10+ years before I got an eink ereader.
2) Proofread and annotate without wasting paper and ink/toner. Saved about 5000+ sheets of paper.
3) Buying ebooks. I can read books bought on Kobo or Amazon or Smashwords, or ebooks.com or Google Playbooks via sideloading.

All the bought and PD content on my Kobos, Kindles, Sony and Y-Ben is sideloaded. The only direct content I've used is Libby/Borrowbox from the local Irish Library via apps on Android (Boyue Likebook Mars). But the TBR pile is so huge I may not have used the Library for over a year.

Obviously #2 isn't a big consideration for most people.

Never had spam due to initial registration of Kindle or Kobo. I don't turn on wifi or use sync since as I use Calibre and USB. No need to sync Kindles or Kobos. Vendor sync doesn't work between vendors anyway.

I have a lot of mainly 19th century texts in PDF format, plus some modern academic PDFs I want to read. My sight is not brilliant and I struggle reading them on a shiny laptop screen, and find them completely unmanageable on a smaller ebook reader. A 10 inch e-ink screen is ideal.

I don't want to buy anything for this reader from the Kobo store, don't want any adverts, and don't see why they should accumulate data about me: I don't call any of those 'working for me'.

I also buy regular books from amazon, but since I read those on smaller devices (Pocketbook and a smaller Kobo - I don't want to carry the Elipsa around away from home) which use Epub format, I manage them in Calibre and convert them to epub there, which I think is another valid reason for sideloading. Not that I should have to justify it

Calibre et Kobo Elipsa 2e

Bonjour,

Correct. The first time calibre is connected and a book is sent, the book is copied to the device's storage.

When the device is disconnected new content is added to the internal database (message on Kobo along the lines of "scanning for new content").

When the device is reconnected to calibre the newly created database entry can be updated to include collections / series data.

Please could you follow the etiquette for this forum and post in English

Sideloading is the term used when books are transferred to the device via an USB connection, ie using a tool like calibre, or a file manager

No, this can't be avoided. Sideloaded mode = no home page.
