new, strange behavior
Hello,
I had a new problem today. It repeated on 6 different books. I imported a book, edited the metadata to add a cover. Then I noticed that I didn't like the title so I click on that field in the list view and entered a new name. Immediately after that I tried to open the book (pdf in these cases) and it told me that there was no such book. Opening the path, the error message was correct; the book and the cover files were both gone. This is the latest version running on a mac. I've use the same procedure many times in the past and never experience any problems whatsoever. Is this a bug or did I again do something that I was supposed to know that I shouldn't do? |

I noticed your other recent threads regarding the Viewer were Windows 11 related, are you sharing a library between Windows and a Mac?

Edit title in file name or edit in title column in Calibre?
You can't at all change the filenames Calibre uses. Pretend the Calibre files don't exist (except for backup). You can have a custom filename with "Save to Disk". Also any external drive ought to use "native" Filesystem of the host OS, i.e. never FAT32 or exFAT. |

I suspect that if on the Mac you look in library folder you will find two very similarly-named copies of the book, perhaps with the author differing in case, the title differing in case, or both. One of them will have the data and the other won't. |

I'd also check to see the un-renamed book is in the folder.
File-locking behaviour changed semi-recently, and and I know JimmXinu reported that he gets occasional failures with it. |

I appreciate the above comments. I will accept the fact that something must have changed in the code because the operation that failed now has worked innumerable times for me in the past.
So I need to take a different approach. I thought that I could simply add my new book using the web interface. It seems straight forward. You click the + button and drag in the file. Well that doesn't work either. It says: Failed to upload the file: calibre.pdf You must be logged in to make changes to the library Failed to communicate with "/cdb/add-book/2/n/calibre.pdf/CalibreLib", with status: [403 (error)] Forbidden Anonymous users are not allowed to make changes This seems strange because there is no option in the web gui to login nor does it prompt for a login after the drag/drop. I've searched the web and all I found were confusing discussions by people who had somehow made this work but it was not clear how they did it. Can someone please explain how to make this work. Also, I'm guessing that if I used a command line like "calibredb add [options] file1 file2 file3 ..." there will still be slogin/permission issue. The manual section on global options mentions --username and --password. It's no clear to me where in the server the allowable usernames and passwords are set nor is it clear whether these command line options need to be specified with each invocation of a calibredb command. I need help; I'm rarely successful filling in the blanks that others may find intuitively obvious. Thank you |

GO to preferences->sharing over the net and add user accounts to the server. Then restart calibre and reload the page in your browser you will be asked to log in.

@chaley - On MacOS/APFS case sensitivity is configurable, and the default is case insensitive, see https://support.apple.com/lv-lv/guid...ku19ed921c/mac.

@BetterRed - Pretty sure it's plain case-insensitive APFS
re: "GO to preferences->sharing " I shut down the server, updated calibre, added users and started the server When trying to add in the web gui I get the same error and no login prompt |

Did you check the "Require username and password to access Content server" box?
