Question My Words

I haven't used "My Words" for a while, but not that long. I was surprised to realize that the list doesn't include the books from which a word stems anymore which is annoying. First, I read in 5 languages, and sometimes I don't know which dictionaries I should access (I have several for each language). Second, I want to know where I took the word from to know which definition is the one I was looking for. Does someone know the last firmware in which the books were available? I might return to it if there was no major problem fixed in a later F/W.

I use My Words and I don’t recall it ever specifying which books the words come from. That would be handy, however. How long ago do you recall seeing the books listed with the words?

I took the time to explore my readers:
  • The Elipsa, F/W 4.35.20400: the last word added was on a book last read 24 October 2022, and like the many words I checked (I have three pages of them) gave as choices when long pressed: "read the definition, show in book, delete"
  • The Libra 2, bought 13 October 2022 because I wanted a cheaper reader in hospital while getting 2 new knees. Same F/W: only two words, the first on a book last read 4 February 2023, same three choices, the second only two choices: "read the definition, delete", so I know neither which book nor of course, when last read
  • The Sage, which I once more (grrr!!!) had to reset totally a month ago. Same F/W. The first seven words gave two choices, the last six words, three choices.
So my conclusion is I have no conclusions. I have no idea why "my words" behaves the way it does. Try a long press on each of your words, and see where it leads you.

I have way too many of them to try every one, but the most recent ones do have "show in book", so it doesn't appear to be due to a recent change. (I am on the current fw.) I read mostly Overdrive/cloudLibrary books, so I would have just assumed the ones without that entry are books that are no longer on the reader. But I don't really know. The Overdrive ones download the kobo preview after they are returned and (at least) some of these show the book name but not the actual passage with the word, so presumably it was from some location in the book other than the preview.

I am pretty sure it did, at one time. I remember doing a database backup of my Clara HD about a year ago and was trying to figure out in which tables the My Words were stored, and I definitely recall there being an association with a book presumably so that the "Show in book" option would function and take you directly to the spot in the book where that word shows up for context.

If they've removed it, I wonder why. I've long requested from Kobo that the "My Words" section should be able to sync across devices and with the smartphone app so that I could turn the words into flashcards and try to drill them. That would be very easy to do with the app, but not so much with the e-reader. So if breaking the association between the word itself and the book you found it in would let them do that, I'd be cool with the change.

You taught me something new! I have never long pressed on the words. It is indeed as you say. Most of my newer words include “Show in book”, but that drops away by the sixth page of words. I suspect two things. One, the ebooks in question are no longer on my Clara 2E. Or Two, when I transferred my old My Words list from my Clara HD to my Clara 2E, the sideloaded books lost their link to the words. The words that still display “Show in book” are all Kobo purchases.

I’ve wanted My Words syncing across Kobo apps and ereaders for ages as well. Kobo does not have a hearty syncing system. Annotations also struggle to sync even between Kobo devices. However, turning My Words into a vocab flash card system is brilliant.

Where do you make your suggestions? I’ll join you.
