Something odd happened after restarting PC.

So.. For some reason, plugins vanished, LIBRARY vanished, everything was gone.

Oh, I found the library, but now half of my collection is 0kb.

Did I mention there is no 'extender' for the plugins? They are marked as 'Installed', but are somehow invisible. Reinstalling the plugins does nothing.


Using the second-to-latest version of Calibre.

Which OS are you using? Which version of this OS?
Have you checked that your Hard disk is ok? On windows, use chkdsk to check for bad blocks.

Plugins and many Calibre settings (includes the location of the current Library) is stored in the Configuration folder. That is Per USER. Are yo logged into the correct account?
Is that computer user account (synced in the cloud) and the sync failed nasty.
Another possibility is your 3rd party security went rogue and restricted acces to the config folder

I lost 600 ebooks once. It turns out my external hard drive was getting old. (Between the backup and scandisk/chkdsk, I got the books back.) I moved the library to another drive. (My other external hard drive, which I use to store backups, hasn't had problems.)

How old is your drive/computer?

This exact same thing happened to me yesterday, Win7, Calibre 4.23 (I've been hanging onto this old version because it has the DRM remover and I've gotten very confused about the new ones/replacements). I came back from vacation to download my latest fanfic chapter updates via FanficFare, and Calibre had NONE of my plugins in any of the menus. But the Preferences says they're all installed. The books/fanfics all appear to be present, though it's hard to say given there's so many of them.

I'm pre-emptively copying all the Roaming/AppData files and the entire Calibre Library to an extra external drive I had handy, but uh...is there a way to get this working on my computer again?

A fix would be to upgrade to Windows 10 64-Bit and install the latest calibre.

Bit late to upgrade to Win10, I think. (Didn't they end free upgrades ages ago?)

Luckily I have a secondary computer that IS running Win10, so I can duplicate my setup there, hopefully. Just a little weirded out that Calibre basically reset itself to the original settings, and trying to figure out how to prevent this in the future.

Calibre rebuilds part or all of the configuration folder when it (the configuration) becomes damaged.
It also creates a (default) Library when it can't find either the current or the default in the expected location. (I don't use the default, so if it appears, I know there was a burp. My Main is on another Hard drive (or partition. My OS and user config is on the SSD)
