cover:false does NOT return books without cover
I have many books without cover, many epub and pdf, but also some mobi. When searching for cover:false I get an empty list.

I use Calibre 3.12.

What can I do to get a list of the books without cover?

If you get an empty list it is because there is a cover in calibre for each of the books. I tried cover:false on my finished library and the list was empty, but on my working library it showed all of the books that did not yet have a cover in calibre.

Those are just 2 libraries I have setup. When I checked for empty covers on my library that is complete it showed me an empty list. But when I checked my working library in which 85% of the books have no covers it showed those 85%.

My point is the search is probably working. When you look at your library in cover grid mode if every book has an image (any image) then it has a cover. See attached for a cover grid without covers.

You can use the quality check plugin to search for small covers.

I checked some books with the file manager and I found no cover.jpg. Still the book did not show with cover:false. Also using the QUality plugin and search for covers of <20 Kb and even1Kb, nothing was found.

But when I look in grid mode I see many books with "strange" covers. Eg. First page of the book, MS Word title, Mumsey Publication cover etc. When I delete those covers then the books do show up with cover:false.

So, I guess I will to inspect 5400 books visually, select all those with strange covers and then automatically download the covers again.

Often the first page of the ebook is used as cover. In that case there is no cover.jpg file to be found for those books.

I am not sure where The Quality check PI checks for covers (suspect it also checks the Library, just with more options )

Calibre does not embed covers in the actual book until the book is exported from calibre using the Send to device or Save to disk features. You can use the Polish feature (epub, AZW3) of calibre to embed the covers into existing books without exporting or use the embed feature of calibre to embed covers into most formats in the library.

Well, I am positive that I have books stored in the Calibre Library subdirectories that do NOT have a cover.jpg and still cover:false does NOT show them.

With edit metadata I can remove the cover, although there is no cover.jpg file.
Then it does show up in cover:false.

I can solve my problem manually by visually inspecting each cover in cover grid view and delete those that do not look like real covers. With more than 5400 books it will keep me off the street for some time https://mobileread.cdn.speedyrails.n...cons/icon7.gif

cover:false works fine for me.

I suspect you might get the results you are seeing if some of your cover.jpg files were removed directly via the op.sys rather than via calibre edit metadata.

Use a batch file like this one ==>> Batch to list folders that don't contain a specific file

Good point.
The OP forgot about the basic rules in calibre: 'No mess under the skirts" (without knowing just what can be done without causing confusion)

OP run the Library Maintenance tool and fix the errors

What is OP?

As far as I remember I did hardly mess with Calibre library files, except maybe one or two cover.jpg I deleted to see if they would now show up with cover:false. I think I also may deleted some duplicate books (entire directory of the duplicate book).

Thanks for pointing out Library Maintenance. Check library found hundreds of missing covers. I click fix. Now I have >600 books with cover:false
