Kindle Oasis (2017) battery dying
When the 2nd Gen of the Kindle Oasis came out in 2017, I thought I had found the perfect e-reader! Loved the screen and the way it felt in my hand. Unfortunately, after 5-6 years, the battery appears to be dying. I just had it plugged in for three hours, it only charged up from 5% to 56%. It’s not the charger, because even when charged to 100% overnight, it only lasted me about 10 hours of reading time.
From what I found online, there’s no good way to replace the battery on the Oasis. I watched two videos where they destroyed screen or the back while doing so. I guess it’s time to buy an Oasis 3? And why couldn’t I have found this out before Prime Day? I could just recharge every night until Black Friday. |

Are you sure something is not stuck indexing? That can drain the battery.

If you mean restarting, no. If you mean factory reset, presumably yes. But there's an easier way to know. Search for a nonsense phrase (for example, gdhehdn) on the homepage; if something is indexing, you should get a reply that not all books have been indexed yet. If the result shows 0 and no unindexed books are displayed, then it's the battery.

If you are OK with switching Readers, I suggest the Kobo Libra 2. It's get much better eBook organization with calibre and it costs less. The Kindle Oasis 3 is $279.99 and the Kobo Libra 2 is $189.99.

One way I avoid indexing is to not have too many books on the device at one time. Maybe the most I’d have on it is 10-15. I routinely go in a delete books from the device. As your problem seems to be the battery you might try this:
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Amazon+...lacement/99289 Seems to be a fairly easy task. Battery 35 bucks, tools about 10. I have a Kindle Voyage with a battery at probably about 50% that someday and I’ll do this repair vs chunk it. You may find other options for replacing the battery with google. To OP: If you're switching soon I would probably jump ship to Kobo instead and then DeDRM all of your Amazon purchased books with Calibre. I don't think it's worth buying the Oasis 3 in this year as it's already 4 years out, and if you wanna stick with Amazon, Paperwhite 5 (2021) is probably the better deal (minus the less ergonomic form factor compared to the Oasis, and no turn buttons.) |

Yes, the PW5 is a good design, but I'm only talking in comparison to the Oasis, the Oasis is objectively more ergonomic than the PW5. Plus for some people it *could* be a dealbreaker not having those buttons.

I would buy an 8" Kobo if it was designed like the H2O with the IR touch, 300DPI, and a larger capacity battery. |

If you're not interested in DRM-ing your books and want to stay with a kindle, the latest Paperwhite is the way to go. Very responsive screen and the battery life is incredible. Especially if you compare it to the battery life of the Oasis that you're used to.

I returned the PW5 because it was absolutely not ergonomic for me. I bought it as an upgrade for the PW3. The bezels were so small that I kept changing pages accidentally, and the device was too tall for me to use one-handed without it tipping backwards. That might not be a problem for someone with larger hands, but it was impossible for me to use comfortably.

If you have a good cover, the PW5 is easier to hold. That applies to all Readers. |
