But there is no puzzle. I disabled uBlock and my pihole, thinking that might be the problem, and tried multiple browsers, but that did not resolve the problem.

Is the puzzle check broken?

I *think* the puzzle linked to a captcha provider "solvemedia" that doesn't seem to exist anymore.
