For example, I want to search for books that have .zip data files.

Is there a way to do that now?

Yes, using a template search and the has_extra_files() template function. Both are described in the calibre manual.

I don't have access to a computer so I can't provide an example. Perhaps someone else can provide one. I have a memory of discussing this in some other thread. Try searching for has_extra_files.

If you plan to search often, it may be worth setting up a non-composite taglike column (populated with a template in Action Chains' single-field edit) for the data files. It would be a bit faster without having to query the filesystem a lot.
