Kobo Aura (Edition 2) Crash/Freeze/Brick

Hi all,

Im new here if you haven't noticed, i registered as ive been experiencing issues with my Kobo Aura (Edition 2), about 10-12 months ago after a few weeks of inactivity (while WFH due to covid) i picked up my Kobo to add a new book, it crashed at the time and seemed to be very unstable so i attempted a factory reset, since then its been stuck on the "restoring" screen.

As i experienced a similar issue years earlier with my old Kobo Mini and draining the battery then recharging fixed the issue.

At first i thought i would allow the battery to drain hoping a reboot would fix it (since it will not turn off or reset on button press), after waiting around a year i noticed its still stuck on the "restoring screen" showing no sign of... anything.

I attempted to then charge it up and connect to PC to link to Kobo Desktop, windows recognises that "a device" is connected but cannot identify it, locate any supporting drivers and Kobo Desktop will not recognise it either.

The device now reacts to button press but only with the white light confirming "on or off" the screen never changes. I assumed this might be a screen issue except it happened when resetting, there's no visible damage to the screen nor any pixel distortion of any kind.

I am completely at a loss of what to do with this thing now so i thought i would ask here since i found many other helpful post regarding similar issues.

Please see the images below:

As you can see there's no visible damage (other than a little dust), i attempted to reset by following the instruction in the below thread but again no results.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

hi utra, maybe i can help you fix your kobo
1. you must disassemble your kobo, open back cover, let do it carefully
2. you can see micro sd card, then put it out and connect it with card-reader to computer
3. format micro sd with fat32 32kbp option, if done it's maybe use normal, if not, you can change a new micro sd card (8 / 16 / 32gb) then format it same as on.
4. use win32diskimager then follow the picture

5. when micro sd card has written, put it in your kobo and wait several minutes
good luck!

OH MY GHOD!!! Do NOT follow trunglinh06's instructions. The μSD card has multiple partitions, only one of which is accessible by Windows. Formatting the card will erase all the partitions including the system and recovery partition. At that point you will need to get an image of a working Aura Ed. 2 μSD card and use the appropriate tools to write the image to it.

See the Memory Upgrade Mod Guide (With Pictures) thread for more on the process and tools needed.

And yes, quite a few people have requested an image file after formatting their μSD card using Windows.

You can request an image by posting in the Kobo Aura Edition 2 SD card image thread.
