Pocket Will Stop Working on Kobo

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...g-in-to-pocket

Quote:
I use Pocket on my Kobo e-Reader. How does this change affect how I log in to Pocket?

Kobo devices unfortunately do not support the specific modern web technologies that Firefox accounts require. Therefore, once this transition is complete, Pocket users will no longer be able to log in, sync, and read articles on Kobo e-Readers. We recognize the value that came from this collaboration, and deeply regret that we will not be able to continue supporting it into the future.

You can continue to use Pocket on your iOS or Android device or use Pocket’s website.
Well this sucks.

Liars. If you "deeply regretted" this, you wouldn't be making the unnecessary change in the first place. You just want to consolidate your control over a useful service by forcing people to use your account system. Mozilla just gets worse and worse as the years go by.

What the hell? I only just started using Pocket to send articles to my kobo and now they cancel it. To be honest I wasn't that impressed with the service anyway - only 1 in 10 articles/blog posts/whatever actually showed up on my kobo. I guess their criteria for viewing something in "article view" was too strict or something.

Are there any nice alternatives for getting articles onto kobo (wirelessly)?

Pocket was one of the reasons I wanted a kobo. Reading on eink is just so much nicer than LCD screens. Hoping for an alternative.

Bad news. If I want to read an article I don't need of any specific modern web technology: I only need to read the article. Kobo is the only reason I use Pocket. When it will be impossible to use it I won't use Pocket anymore.

How's the markdown integration with Kobo? I'm converting articles to markdown for use in Obsidian already. Pocket was just easy to sync, but now I'll cancel my Pocket sub and figure out a way to send those markdown articles to my Kobo.

Firefox gets less and less open and customizable all the time. Sorry to the folks who use Pocket, I never have. I didn't even realize Firefox had bought Pocket, but I did know that (by default) they were putting it my toolbar and in my home page (in Firefox). I always removed it from both places. I wonder how long before before they try to force us to keep it it there? I've never had a Firefox account either (and I'm not going to get one). Maybe it's time to look for a different browser.

I wrote this proxy layer that sits between the kobo and pocket servers and uses omnivore to gather articles.

https://github.com/Podginator/KoboOmnivoreConverter

Pocket is on a downward spiral after their iOS changes. Utterly pathetic of them to pull this move.

I wanted to ask if anyone knew how to prevent updates in the future? My layer relies on the pocket app still being in nickel. Is there a way to spoof version numbers so that in the future I do not lose access to the kobo store?

There were plenty of work arounds for them, even if they aren’t specifying exactly WHAT security features they are adding.

For instance, they could have allowed Kobo to proxy requests from an external server that does implement their new security features.

They don’t care, and it’s not about that. Their recent iOS changes so their sheer contempt for their users. Removing all the features actually related to reading.

agreed this is bad news, Pocket was one of the key reasons I chose Kobo. But hopefully it's an opportunity for an alternative solution. I'm afraid podginator's tool is beyond my understanding (does it require self-hosting?). But I guess if omnivore is a pocket alternative, then one could make an omnivore page a homepage on the kobo? I'm so fed up with the increased locking up and surveillance of rmy eading! And 2fA isn't secure! All it does is prove someone has access to a charged mobile phone.

Yes, self hosted - but working on a version that runs on the kobo itself - that’ll be just an update file. Early days though.

And same. The only reason I bought the kobo was for pocket. I paid for pocket. I have used it for 11 years. They’ve also ruined their iOS app. I’m so dissapointed in them

Very interesting. Any thoughts on possibly collaborating with Calibre-web?

I am already using their Kobo-sync/Proxy, which is really great for my purposes. This would dovetail nicely I think.

EDIT: Nevermind. I should have looked into what Omnivore was first.

I was trying to find solutions. I've used Push-to-Kindle in the past (because it can also be used for ePubs). At some point, since the last time I tried it, they added the ability to "push" to PocketBooks as well as Kindles. (I guess this is because PocketBook has a Send-to-PocketBook feature.) I don't know if Pocket does more than this, however. There's an add-on for Firefox (and other browsers) and (once you've set it up) it will send a formatted ePub directly to a Pocketbook. I guess for it to be really useful, however, you'll need the "Premium" plan ($3 a month) as the free plan is only good for 10 articles per month.

I'm still looking. This would work with the Kobo as well, but you would have to manually move the ePub from your computer to the Kobo. (I wonder if this application could be connected to Kobos as well?)

Here are some screenshots (of the article linked in the first post of this thread). Is this basically what Pocket looks like? I wonder if this application could be connected to Kobos as well?

EDIT: It looks like Push-to-Kindle will "push" to DropBox, so that might be a solution for the Kobos that support that option.
