Resend Epubs?
My entire library is Epub, which over the years have always converted to mobi to send to kindle, so I can take advantage of whispersync and such. Now that epub covers are supported, would there be any advantages to resending my library with the original epubs? Mostly from Amazon saying the mobi format is outdated.

Yes. Custom fonts and the boldness slider would be available, to name two advantages. Also formatting is generally better.

I went back through my personal documents and re-sent them all as ePub so they'd get better formatting on my Scribe and I assume other Kindles and the apps when they decide to start sending KFX personal documents to them as well (wonder what they are waiting for).
In most cases these were ePub to begin with (from Tor and the like). I did 'upgrade' them to ePub3 first, and haven't had any S2K conversion issues with any of them. |

Well, even if they never send KFX to any Kindle except the Scribe, KF8 still has better formatting than MOBI, so if I were the OP I'd resend my epubs.

So far it is all hypothetical: Scribe has been the only Kindle I've used since I got one. I do read with Kindle iPad but haven't looked at any of these on there to see if they look better.

I have an Oasis and sent a few epub as testers, both bold slider and alignment options are greyed out

I no longer have a modern Kindle to test myself, and when I had, I always sideloaded via USB to get the azw3 format. |

Yes, and that does not enable bold slider etc. But I would need to test to be sure.

Personal documents are KF8 (AZW3) for the most part (with bold slider). It may be that very old ones (sent before personal documents supported KF8) still are old mobi. Last edited by tomsem; 06-10-2023 at 08:41 PM. |

Alignment option is only available in KFX, the bold option should work if it is an KF8. If you don't have bold option, it somehow downloaded the old MOBI file. Try deleting one test personal document completely from the library, and resend the EPUB. Bold slider should show up, but left/justified won't unless you sideload them as homemade KFX files.

Thanks DuckieTigger for highlighting such a simple way for figuring out which of AZW, KF8 or KFX was actually sent to the Kindle for a given book. I used to rely on the presence or lack of cover in the library view (as covers used to not show up on KF8 files delivered via Whispersync), but this was fixed in a relatively recent firmware update.
