What are the files in .kobo/kepub?
As title. I suspect they are Kobo Plus files. They system will open them with calibre, but calibre can't import them, nor the Calibre viewer can show them.

You need Obok plugin to get those files from your Kobo to Calibre. |

EDIT outdated info in italic
I tried to rename the files, as their name was an UUID. Now Calibre opens them, but it seems they were some books I sideloaded with Calibre times ago. Sorry for the confusion. Last edited by Lucas Malor; 04-15-2023 at 11:08 AM. |

I'm not familiar with epubor, and I run on Windows, so I've no idea about Linux compatibility, but you can check on the actual github of the plugins (linked from here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=253119)
That said, since the content of .kobo/kepub is what it's linked to your Kobo account, you can get the epub/acsm files of what you purchased by logging into your account on their website and then going to My Account -> My Books -> click on the three dots under "Actions" -> Download |

Emh, as I said in the previous post, the kobo epubs under .kobo/kepub are not Kobo Plus books. There's no "download" option for Kobo Plus books ;-) Last edited by Lucas Malor; 04-15-2023 at 11:09 AM. |

![]() Under .kobo/kepub there are all files that Kobo manages automatically (.kobo -> that's a hidden folder). You have here:
Kobo Plus books aren't books you purchased, so you can't download them from their store. But they are linked to your account, so you just need to log again to your account on your Kobo to see them again on your device. If you are trying to get them from Kobo to Calibre, sorry, but this would fall in "piracy" category for me, since you are downloading something that isn't actually yours. So I'm out giving you advice on how to work-around the blocks Kobo may have to avoid this scenario. |

Thank you JSWolf, I removed the link.
About the files in .kobo/kepub folder, I was wrong. They ARE Kobo Plus books. You can open them with Calibre reader renaming them with SOMENAME.kepub.epub. But it's perfectly useless, since the text is crypted. I suppose this make Kobo Plus completely useless. I prefer to buy a single book and own it. |

I use Kobo Plus for much the same reasons I used Kindle Unlimited. Over the decades, I've found there are a lot of books that I will read once. If I found the book compelling enough that I would re-read it, I would purchase it. Since Kobo Plus allows me to have unlimited books unlike KU's limit of 20, I find myself purchasing fewer books. When there was only physical books, I went to the bookshop and I read some pages of the book to see if it was interesting before buying it. No one asked me 10 euros per month for doing that. Furthermore, physical libraries still exists, luckily. This is a Netflix-like approach. I never appreciated that. People are happy with that? OK, but it's not for me. I can choice to continue with Kobo Plus or to return to buy only selected books, and I prefer the second choice. My two cents. |

For me, I pick up more than 10 books per month using Kobo Plus so the cost per book is low enough that I don't worry about it. For my average ebook purchase price, I'd be able to purchase less than 2 per month before spending more than the cost of my Kobo Plus subscription.
You could always use Amazon and download samples if that is your choice as a method for choosing your purchases. |

The Kobo shop has previews, both in the browser and on the device. No subscription to Kobo Plus required.
