Can I use a Scribe without activating?

I love the idea of a 10 inch eReader with 300DPI and warm light capability. Since I prefer the Kobo software to that of the Kindle I wanted to go that route. Unfortunately they're stuck at 227 DPI on their Elipsa and will be that way for the indeterminate future. This makes the Scribe look very attractive.

I've got tons of epubs I read on my current Kobo and would like to convert them and sideload them onto the Kindle. I doubt that I'll need anything from Amazon other than the reader itself.

Is it possible to use a Kindle Scribe without activating it with Amazon or do I have to connect it to an Amazon account?

If the software is the same as other kindles you will be promoted to add it to an Amazon account during set up. You can’t get past that. As for deregistering it after set up, certain functions, such as collections, don’t work without the Kindle being linked to an Amazon account.

If it's only ePubs (or converted azw3 or mobi), then consider a Kobo Sage, 8″ @ 300 dpi. I found the 10.3″ (reMarkable and Elipsa) too big and heavy for prolonged reading.
The Scribe, as with all Kindles, only has Series info when the book bought from Amazon has it. Collections can't be done by Calibre and only manually at all when registered. The Collections are meant to be managed on your Amazon web page.
In addition "Send to Kindle" via web or email needs the Kindle to be registered and some of the extra functionality in the Scribe uses Amazon's servers.

Unless you have good eyesight and loading A4/Letter size PDFs you'd not notice the 300 dpi vs 227 dpi, but the Sage is essentially an 8″ version of the Elipsa with warmlight and page turn buttons. I ignored the Sage because I had a Libra, but after 2 or 3 days of using the Elipsa I bought the Sage and use it to read all my epubs and many PDFs. It's a better size for note taking too.

The Kindles need you to register and be happy with Amazon's services, especially the Scribe. I nearly bought a Scribe because of the 300 dpi, but I'm glad I didn't. I'll make do with the Sage and occasional Elipsa use till something better comes.

Sounds like the Elipsa is a better choice. I own both and the screen quality is just as good on the elipsa. I really can't tell a difference. Kobo sage is also a note device and is quite nice

I've got a Kobo Sage and to date it is the best eReader that I've owned. I'm very wary about getting anything with less than the 300 DPI as I definitely noticed a great difference a few years back when the first 300 DPI readers came on the market. I found them to be a very big improvement over the lower resolution. The first gen Elipsa is not only 227 DPI but doesn't have a warmlight feature and I definitely want that. My wife uses a Kindle Oasis without a warmlight and that just isn't as nice to read at night.

The Elipsa 2E does have the warmlight but with only the 227 DPI I'm very hesitant to drop $400 on one at least not before looking at it up close first. That's hard to do as no one locally carries Kobo readers.

I'd recommend Voja's ~2 hour Elipsa 1 review on My Deep Guide if you're on the fence. He had no complaints about the display quality. If you want 300 PPI and to avoid Amazon, then you essentially have to do nothing and stick with the Sage, since you have no other options currently, AFAIK.

Thanks! I'm checking out this guy's reviews right now. He's very good.

Also, reviewer fails to mention (2E) use of folders, integration with Dropbox, and soon Google Drive, and handwriting search, which are not available on the Scribe.

You're welcome. I've been very impressed with his attention to detail. Some of his unboxing videos are more in depth than other people's reviews!
