Need to modify the file names on my kindle
I am reading a series of novels that come in a perscribed order. In order to make sure that I read them in the right order I am going to attach a series identifyer and an order number to the books that I will append to the end of the file name in the format pw 1, pw 2, pw 3. Is this operation possible on my kindle? Can I modify the file name to append my series identifyer and book number?

Changing the physical file names of the ebooks will have absolutely no effect on the title displayed on your Kindle's home screen... nor will it affect their sort order (PDF and text files may show the file name, I'm not really sure).
You need to edit the title in the ebook's metadata with something like calibre's metadata editor (or calibre plugboards) or Mobi2Mobi GUI or the Java Mobi Metadata Editor to accomplish your goals. Last edited by DiapDealer; 04-13-2012 at 08:38 AM. |

Calibre plugboards are (IMHO) the best way to achieve this.

As others have said, Plugboards are the answer to altering the title display on the device. I've attached a screen shot of mine. It also changes the author to author_sort. I also alter the filename when I output the file from calibre (Save-to-Disk and Send-to-Device) using a Save Template. Save Template: {series} {series_index:0>2s} {title} - {authors} |

I am reading the Dresden Files, and after reaching half of the "second" book (or rather what I THOUGHT was the second book of the series), I found out that I actually had read the sixth book for starters ("Blood rites"), and I am currently reading the twelfth book ("Changes")... I then checkd if the file names were botched, but instead they are corretly named "author - order number - title".
I then proceeded to try and see if I could order (or rather, sort) by file name, and no, you can't. I was already set to "recent", and trying "author" and "title" helped nothing. I then found this thread which is EIGHT YEARS OLD, and I had my "ooohhh" moment after suspecting that already. Really comforting to notice that in 8 years time they couldn't be disturbed to frigging add a "sort by file name" function! That is just stupid to a whole new order of magnitude. Not likely I am installing Calibre, moving all the books from the kindle back to my pc, and learn how to use the wildcards to update the metadata for that before copying them over again. I'll just settle reading all the series that I neatly have ordered by filename, in a seemingly random order. STUPID KINDLE SOFTWARE. |

It's your fault for picking a book thinking it was a different book. I've never seen the book list where books get mixed up. The only way that would happen is if you had incorrect metadata. Get over it and go learn how to use your Kindle. |

If you don't want to mess with the metadata plugboards in Calibre, an easy solution is to write the right series order up in a text file and send it to your Kindle. You can then consult it on your device before you start the next book in the series.

When you reach the end of an Amazon-purchased ebook, the Kindle software automatically asks if you want to read the next title in the series avoiding the library sort issue altogether. Kindles can read sideloaded books but that's not their primary function so I wouldn't expect Amazon to ever include a sort by filename option. |

This is the reason I started adding a jacket to the books. But the series order must be correct in calibre.

I can understand the user error concept.
Up to a point, I even agree with it! ...says the guy who bought a -once was- next gen ebook reader that is missing a "sort by filename" function which would have taken 2 minutes and less than 10 lines of coding ![]() IMHO having the ability to sideload books grants by itself a "sort by filename", yet this is like discussing about the gender of angels. I like Sirtel's suggestion tho, it surely beats always going online to check which one is the next ![]() |
