Newbie questions about KOReader and KUAL
Hello! I just bought a jailbroken Kindle Oasis 3 (FW 5.14.2) from someone on here MobileReads (thanks lexic!), and I have a couple of questions:
1. I tried to install the latest version of KOReader (2023.03, the "PW2" version, following instructions from https://github.com/koreader/koreader...Kindle-devices), and I have unzipped into the root directory of my Kindle (so there is both a /koreader and a /extensions/koreader directory), and I can see it in my KUAL booklet, but whenever I try to run it, KUAL just closes, and the whole screen flashes once, and then nothing happens afterwards. Tried the "no framework" and "ASAP" versions, and I don't even get the flashing - KUAL closes and nothing happens. I did see some logs in /koreader/crash: --------------------------------------------- launching... _ _____ ____ _ | |/ / _ \| _ \ ___ __ _ __| | ___ _ __ | ' / | | | |_) / _ \/ _` |/ _` |/ _ \ '__| | . \ |_| | _ < __/ (_| | (_| | __/ | |_|\_\___/|_| \_\___|\__,_|\__,_|\___|_| It's a scroll... It's a codex... It's KOReader! [*] Current time: 03/20/23-21:46:44[*] Version: v2023.03 ffi.load: libs/libutf8proc.so.2 ffi.load: blitbuffer ./luajit: ./ffi/framebuffer_linux.lua:55: cannot open framebuffer stack traceback: [C]: in function 'assert' ./ffi/framebuffer_linux.lua:55: in function 'init' ./ffi/framebuffer_mxcfb.lua:763: in function 'init' ./ffi/framebuffer.lua:138: in function 'new' frontend/device/kindle/device.lua:1044: in function 'init' frontend/device.lua:62: in main chunk [C]: in function 'require' ./reader.lua:151: in main chunk [C]: at 0x00013e9d Has anyone seen this before? 2. I'm not sure I understand how KUAL is supposed to work. Whenever I press on some item in the menu (e.g. KUAL -> "Rename OTA binaries" -> "Rename"), KUAL just closes. Does that mean... it did anything? Same thing if I put some .bin into the /mrpackages directory and go to KUAL -> Helper+ -> Install MR Packages, it just takes me back to the Oasis home screen and nothing happens. This isn't the case for all menu items though (KUAL -> Helper+ -> SHOW Network Info DOES show network info after quitting to the home screen), so I'm quite confused on how this is supposed to work. Thank you all so much! |

That looks like an incomplete jailbreak (the KOReader log is pretty damning, and that would also explain the KUAL behavior you're seeing).
Reinstall the latest hotfix and reboot a couple of times, see if it helps? |

Thanks so much @NiLuJe for your help!
I tried to follow the steps from https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=346037, the Post Jailbreak portion only: 1. After the device has rebooted, type ;uzb into the search bar I reboot the device (not in demo mode, also logged into Amazon), type ";uzb" into the search bar, nothing happens, I just go back to the home screen. 2. Connect the device to a PC and copy Update_hotfix_watchthis_custom.bin to the root of the Kindle storage Done. 3. Eject the device and either enter ;dsts or swipe down and select the settings icon to enter the device settings menu ";dsts" does nothing, have to manually select the settings icon. 4. Select Update Your Kindle to install the custom hotfix "Update Your Kindle" is grayed out. Should I have reset the device or factory-reset the device before trying these? Should I log out of Amazon? Is there a way to wipe the partial jailbreak and completely start over the JB process? Thanks again for your help! |
