Wacom Drivers Incompatibility

On the freezes and crashes section of the calibre FAQ, it states that there is an incompatibility with the drivers wacom uses and the graphics toolkit calibre uses.

I'm concerned hearing this, as I use a Wacom graphics tablet regularly and have its drivers installed.

It says to not use a Wacom mouse if you have one, but doesn't say what to do if you use one of their tablets.

How serious is this issue? Would it just make my program freeze occasionally or could it be more damaging to my program, or even my PC?

I downloaded the installer, but after reading this I'm too nervous to install the program.

Is it time to start looking for another program?

Installing calibre won't nuke your PC.

The FAQ reference to Wacom is quite old… like a decade or more, and I don't recall any Wacom specific issues being raised for almost as long. And, unlike you most new users don't read the FAQs before they install.

Given the time lapse it is possible that the problem has gone away. So make sure you have the latest Wacom drivers installed, and a recent version of Windows before installing calibre.

As you already know the Wacom incompatibility lies (lay) with the Qt framework that calibre uses, a search for "Qt problems with Wacom devices" will provide relevant links.

You might want to wait until Kovid Goyal drops by, he knows his way around the QT bug reporting system better than most. He's normally here most days.

As to looking for another program... there is no other program even remotely like Calibre. There are some free and paid converters, there are editing programs, there are ebook reading programs, but no library management program even close to doing everything Calibre does. Plus you'll get conversion, reading and editing in the same package, instead of having to install multiple different programs.

There's just no real alternative to Calibre out there.

It wint affect your PC in anyway, at worst it will cause calibre to freeze. If that happens to you you will know what the likely culprit is.

I haven't seen any issues using calibre on a Windows 11 computer with the Wacom drivers for an Wacom One tablet installed though I have not used the tablet when running calibre.
