Calibre bookmark files in purchased books

Mostly just out of curiosity: has anybody else ever found Calibre bookmark files inside a newly purchased book?

It's happened a few times to me. The Kobo edition of StarBridge is the only one I can remember off-hand, but I think the rest were all self-published or small publishers.

Maybe the person making the eBook took a peek at the file in ebook-viewer before uploading it?

Yes. I'm pretty sure the ebook was viewed and perhaps edited in Calibre before uploading. They're indies and self-pubs, as you said.

People may not realise by default the Viewer stores bookmarks in the ebook, but there is a setting to turn it off.

At least it means the book was generated with Indesign

And anyone would be mad not to check out the TOC and all the links in Calibre Viewer and then to check on actual eink.

Amazon recommends epub upload for KDP and I've no idea if they'd strip bookmarks.
