Official Scribe cover fraying

Mine and my other half’s Scribe covers are both fraying all over the place - we are very gentle with them, but they have kind of plasticized rubber strips coming off all round the outside, that you have to pull at to try and clear it away.

It’s not going to last two months, let alone longer.

I’ve bought a new cover I can use in landscape, it is basic, but I will use this for now.

I think I would get hold of Amazon and demand replacements. There's got to be some kind of warranty — weren't they fairly expensive?

Yes! They were $60! I will probably contact them soon about this. I saw someone on Reddit also mentioned this happening to them. It is also mentioned in a lot of the reviews on Amazon. Not sure if it only affects the fabric covers or if it also affects the “leather” ones too.

This also happens to other Kindles' fabric cases btw (mine has it and it's an Oasis 2/3 one), it doesn't happen with leather I believe though, since those aren't made of strands of fabric glued down. Those have nothing that can fray- only worn down and torn.

I also have the fabric cover for my Oasis, and it has not worn in the same way. My Scribe is just over a month old. Plus the fabric is different, it seems to have an elasticizer in it, weirdly enough, this is fraying away in ribbons from the sides.

I haven’t had any luck with a generic replacement cover, so I’ll contact Amazon CS soon and see what they say. I don’t fancy trying the leather one on the off chance it might not have this plasticizer, feels like I would be throwing good money after bad.

Update: I’m very pleased with Amazon's response - they have given me a full refund for both of our fabric covers, so I am going to try the leather cover and see if it behaves any better wrt fraying. They’re on sale right now, as well, so the refund covers the cost of them.

Here’s hoping.

ETA: interestingly, for both fraying covers, Amazon has listed the reason for the refund as 'Damaged in transit'. Hmmm

Interesting - I bought a Fire Tablet with a 'fabric' cover last year, and have noticed that the edges of the cover are fraying a bit - fortunately, not enough to do anything about it yet. Must be a generic design issue.

I can second this. My Oasis 2 original waterproof fabric magnetic attach cover is still going strong with good edges. The only downside is the incompatibility with the Oasis 3 and some metal shavings that accumulated by the magnets.

Apart from the fraying, how well does the Scribe cover work? Do you usually leave it attached when reading, or only when you need a stand?

I like it. I have replaced the fabric one with leather one, which feels nicer, and I am hopeful it will not fray as the edges feel more finished.

Sometimes I pop it out to read it, but most of the time I have it in the cover. It's a great cover if you keep changing your mind on whether to have it on or off. I would rather have the option of landscape as well as portrait, but I like it more than I thought I would.

As I do like reading in landscape, I had also tried a rotating cover allowing flipping between portrait and landscape, but the rotation was kind of clunky, and left the pen sticking out at an angle, so I returned it. I also tried an origami case for the same reason, but this seemed to compress the Scribe too much - at least, I’m guessing that’s what caused the pen to be out of alignment in certain areas of the screen when using this case.

So, based on the four cases I’ve tried, the leather Amazon one is the best for my needs. And when I want landscape, I’ll just use my book stand.

That sounds good. Have you tried to hack the cover to make it do things it wasn't meant to do? Since it attaches magnetically and the Scribe is flat in the back, maybe it is possible, maybe even designed to turn sideways. There's got to be some magnets that lign up if you leave the cover in portrait, but turn Scribe sideways.

This was an interesting idea, but when I tried it, there was no way for it to work, due to position of the magnets, plus the ridges at each corner of the cover in portrait mode prevent the reader being placed in any other orientation.

It was worth a shot. At least they added the bumpers as an improvement from the last magnetic attach Kindle cover.
