Ok... I have had an issue for a while with Calibre mostly not running on a new to me computer I was moving to from an old one.
Details New computer AMD Ryzen 7 1st gen with AMD Vega 64 video card. 1tb Samsung NVME as OS drive and 4tb crucial NVME as library. 32 gigs ram. Liquid cooled cpu and video card. (this system was a used gift to me from a friend that got something newer.) OS Ubuntu 22.04 fully updated to current date. Calibre fully updated to this date. issue or similar issues persisted over about 6 months and updates to Calibre and OS over that same time. It worked most of the time with some hand holding but this week was a hard no and now having OS instabilities and a consistent Segmentation Fault when starting Calibre. While playing with this, uninstalling Calibre and reinstalling, running latest OS updates etc.. because my screen was freezing I decided to update video drivers. I was running an older (from about 6 months ago) Radeon Vega 64 driver I downloaded from AMD's website for the video card. Following their directions I uninstalled that driver and rebooted, intending to install the latest one. (which I haven't done yet) After rebooting all instability went away and calibre is working like a champ. So I am not sure why it was causing this and it isn't a calibre issue but calibre having issues on a similar platform might be an indicate that you have a driver issue with your AMD video card on Linux using ? some? drivers directly from AMD. For some reason calibre was the most affected by this of anything I use on the computer. Most stuff ran fine and a few things would crash once in a while but calibre wouldn't even start period at this point. I haven't updated to the latest AMD drivers and am just using the opensource ones right now. Not sure I want to go to the effort to mess further until I hit something I want to do that the current opensource ones aren't providing. I hope that this helps someone if they are seeing similar issues. |
