What Constitutes a Malformed Book?

In trying to figure out what's going on with my Forma's sudden battery drain issue, I keep running across statements that this could be caused by my sideloading badly formatted ebooks that are, perhaps, leading to loops, corrupting the device's database and draining the battery. Assuming this is not so much organic fertilizer, what constitutes a badly formed book? Almost everything I read, I've sideloaded from Calibre after stripping out the publisher's crud formatting and substituting my own. And, before I'm done, I make sure the book completes clean runs of both the Calibre Editor's Check Book tool and the EpubCheck plugin. Shouldn't that prevent me from sideloading badly formed books?

All my books are sideloaded from Calibre, and while I fix the formatting to my taste, I never run any checks on them. No unusual battery drain on either of my Kobos. I have well over a thousand books on each.

A little while ago I had an ebook where the paperback was 520 odd pages, and the ebook had the entire novel in one html page. Something like 4,000+ lines.

Though I never sideloaded it until I fixed it, I imagine it would be draining for the ereader to try and format for display that large html file?

A more common problem for the Kindle as it does a full index of eBook contents.
Kobo FW scans newly added books and adds them to the database, that has worked if it appears on Unread list. Then there is only an issue if you try to read a malformed/faulty book.

Your issue is more likely a faulty cell (battery).

You'd only see an issue if you tried to open it, if it was a problem.

Not sure what might. But it sounds like you have the chops and desire to move up to a heavyweight editor like Sigil.

I got frequent "malformed books" on my Aura HD from the SD card crapping out.

I've got a few of those (interestingly, most of them are omnibuses). They cause Kobo to freeze up for a few seconds when loading. I usually split the files now.

Something wrong with the actual transfer to, or the storage on, the ereader is what I was considering as being the most likely cause of "malformed" books. I might do a full, manual factory reset of this Forma and re-sideload everything just to make sure nothing's gone bad.

I always use the Calibre checker and epubcheck. That way, I can fix any errors I may have made.
