A feature request/bug?

Hi,

Long time user of calibre and love it. I've recently had some issues on my laptop where it appeared like it froze when i ran a bulk convert or edit metadata. After a big of digging, it wasn't froze, instead the pop up window was "off screen" on my laptop. it is a laptop that is sometimes docked with multiple monitors, but in this case i was unplugged. I had to use alt- space-m on a windows computer to fumble the window to the main screen.

The request/bug is to set the handling of those pop up windows to default to the same screen as the main program. Is that possible?

A simpler way to make 'off screen windows' visible is to right click the task bar and select "Cascade windows".

That option is not present in Windows 11.

Too busy moving the start button to the middle of the taskbar.

Popup windows will show up on the same screen as the main window by default. You have to do something different to make them show up elsewhere.

The problem is that if I move the popup window's position and don't move it back before closing, it will remember the position where it was closed and attempt to open there. For me, that means the external monitor I use at one site will be where the popup will attempt to open even if that monitor is not connected when I am using no external monitors or at a second site where I have a docking station with 2 large screen monitors attached.

At times, alt-space and then m seem to taking over as my favourite keystrokes.

If the second monitor is not currently connected the window is moved back to the primary monitor automatically. If that's not happening for you, the run calibre in debug mode once with the second monitor connected, move the popup to it. Then quit calibre and save the debug log. Then repeat with the monitor disconnected and open the popup and then quit calibre. Post the two debug logs.

There was also a user in the FanFicFare thread that had a dialog get stuck off-screen, though I'm not too sure of the details of it.

Are you able to select the pop-up with Alt+Tab then use Windows Key+Left Arrow? This is how I retrieve apps that are on a disconnected monitor, but I don't know if it works when there's a dialog open.

For me, when editing/downloading metadata, the only item that shows in Alt-Tab is the original calibre window.

I suspect some of my issues are due to the use of two video adapters in my laptop (Intel UHD and Nvidia Quadro) and their use with different monitors.
