Question Edit Authors list

I added a book series of over 140 books. Calibre picked up lots of erroneous Authors and Tags. Is it possible to clean up those lists?

Thanks and Happy Holidays,

Abe

I would use the Manage Categories tool, you will need to add it to a toolbar or a menu, viz:

Picked up? From where/what?
Calibre uses book metadata (or optionally file name) during ADD.

Unfortunately Downloaded metadata is (IMHO) iffy if you just 'let it rip'
I prefer to cherry pick by manually doing each book, Ctrl+D if in the main GUI and ALWAYS click Review (I use the arrows for what I want to keep and Edit the left side as needed. In some cases the wrong stuff is found and I use the REJECT button,
Or use the button in the MDE and choose (or reject if none is satisfactory)

Also, you can use the Tag Browser (right click:manage...) to normalize spelling variations or just bulk remove excess tags. That affects all books that had those values from 1 place.

Thank you. I will look at both suggestions and try and clean up my data.

The book series is about the U. S. Army in World War II, commonly called The "Green Books" as the original volumes all had plain green bindings. The series covers all aspects of the Army in WWII, not just the combat operations portion. Commissioned just after the war this series was published from, approximately, 1947 through sometime in the 1970s. They were published by the Office of the Chief of the Center of Military History (CMH), Department of the Army. Noted historians or subject matter experts wrote all of the books.

These books are in the public domain so if you are interested in obtaining any of the volumes feel free to contact me.

My 'picked up' question was not about where the books came from, but where the metadata came from.

I'm more into Shipboard systems being ex-NAVY

All of the metadata came from Calibre's downloading. I did add some of the metadata, taking it from the books themselves. They have a year published, but not a specific date. The authors are correct from either source.

The books all have a Library of Congress catalog number, but they have been archived and the information is not readily available.

I do not have anything that speaks to shipboard conditions, etc. The following link should be a good place to start looking for naval books. Go to https://www.history.navy.mil/browse-...ld-war-ii.html.

Again, send me a private message if you wish a copy of any of the Green Books.

FWIW each metadata source can be more finely configured to fit your taste and what you consider the better results.
Preferences: Metadata download:
The tick boxes on the right are Overall
If you select a source:then click the Configure source button, you can disable specific fields from that source.

Covers have a Priority column on the main screen. Given multiple results, the priority biases those.

Have fun

@theducks - for the books in question, the arse-about-face metadata that comes in a free PDF download from here is just as arse-about if you download the metadata from here.
