Music Rant and Vent Thread

This is in response to comments in the Reading Rant and Vent Thread about making a separate thread concerning issues concerning music.

For me, one of the major irritants in music is either the lack of Composer Credits and Composer Credits that are so small you can't read them without a strong magnifying class. I recently started updating the Composer Credits in my digital music collection. It would seem to be an easy job since I have the CDs with the booklets, and my downloads should have already had the composer credits including (incomplete credits in downloads is another irritant).

That is often not the case. It is not unusual to have to track down the Composer Credits from many on-line sources (including MusicBrainz). Sometimes I have to go to Discogs and look at the actual 45/LP label/album jacket to get the Composer Credits because that's the only way to track down the information. In a few cases even that is not enough.

Patio Lanterns. It's a pretty decent song, but the local stations are a little obsessed with it.

Also early 2000s songs are now apparently classic rock. I feel old.

Well, it seems that every 20 years music from the previous comes back into fashion. In the 70s music of the 50s came back, and in the 90s music from 70s came back. Following that, music from 2000s should be back in fashion now.

Of course, there are some songs that are permanently in fashion. "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley never went away. I guess it could be renamed "Never Gonna Go Away."

The "genre" of classic rock is kind of meaningless anyways. I think it was actually originally a radio format, a spin-off of album-oriented rock.

Yes, a meaningless genre.

It's not just "Classic Rock" but so many genres that are useless or nearly useless because they don't actually describe the music. I mentioned in another thread that one I dislike is "Soundtrack" which says little about the music other than it was used in a movie/TV show. One show alone (Northern Exposure) has a soundtrack album with music in the following genres: Rock, R&B, and Blues. It also has another genre that I dislike for the same reason that I dislike "Soundtrack": TV Score.

Speaking of soundtracks... One of the sad parts about CD drives being removed from computers is no longer seeing questions like "why is Half-Life randomly playing Bob Marley?" or "why is Age of Empires 2 randomly playing pop music?"

The answer was invariably "take the audio CD out of the drive."

This bug/feature also affected the Steam version of Half-Life, which doesn't run from the disc anymore lol.
