Ebook not rendering font correctly in specific book
I have a kindle copy of 'The Crusades through Arab eyes' and am having a bit of a problem. Doesn't matter which format I send it to the kindle in, AZW3/KFX some of the text is just not rendering properly, specifically some of the (I think) Arabic text.
I can see in Calibre that it has embedded fonts, so the actual squiggly Arabic renders perfectly, but some of the other letters which are Latin letters with lines above or below them aren't. In Calibre reader this is how it renders: https://i.imgur.com/6TSZUP7.png On the kindle it will show up like this: "venerable [...] ÑaÝad al-Íarawi". I am not doing anything with the embedded fonts, not removing them or messing with the file, any way i can get this to work because the book is unreadable in this state. All fonts work in Calibre fine with the file, the same font with the same file on the kindle either in azw3 or kfx isn't rendering the latin+squiggle characters. Thanks. |

That book uses custom fonts that map some codepoints to non-standard glyphs. You need to have those fonts enabled in order for the book to render properly. On the Kindle make sure that you have "Publisher font" selected as your font choice, otherwise incorrect characters will be shown as you indicated.
It looks to me like that book was originally created using a pre-Unicode 8-bit character set, such as Windows-1252, and the publisher substituted unused characters with those needed for the book. Last edited by jhowell; 11-12-2022 at 02:34 PM. |
