My calibre catalog of books is on external hard drive. Can I run calibre without it?

My calibre catalog of books is huge, so I am keeping them on an external 2TB hard drive. It seems that the calibre program also is on the external hard drive. Unfortunately this means that if I don't have my external hard drive, I can't run calibre.

Is there a way to run calibre without the external hard drive, while keeping all my books on the external hard drive.

(Just to be clear, when I say that my book/catalog is on my external hard drive, I mean to say that they are in a calibre-sorted / calibre-organized sort of way.)

I'm on Linux Mint

CALIBRE_OVERRIDE_DATABASE_PATH

I can't tell you how it'd properly behave when the drive is disconnected, though.

I just ran Calibre from my menu.

I got this screen with these details:
Quote:
calibre, version 6.17.0
ERROR: Failed to create library: Failed to create calibre library at: '/media/computer/seagate/text/calibre_library'.
You will be asked to choose a new library location.

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "calibre/gui2/main.py", line 183, in get_library_path
File "os.py", line 215, in makedirs
File "os.py", line 215, in makedirs
File "os.py", line 225, in makedirs
PermissionError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/media/computer/seagate'

Note: "seagate" is my 2TB external hard drive.

----
i don't want to create a new library.
The reason I want to invoke calibre withuot the 2tb external hard drive is because I have an ACSM file that I want calibre to work on. When I get back home, where the 2tb external hard drive is, then I plan to add the epub file with the rest of the calibre library.

click ok in the error message and choose a new library location.

Or run calibre as

calibre --with-library "/path/to/new/library/location"

Dear Dev,
I'm scrared that if i choose a new location, it will mess things up going forward. Will it mess things up? I want to revert to my regular external hard drive after this rare occasion.

This seems a bit strange as an ACSM file is NOT an ebook file that calibre can work on.
