Sideloading fonts: what's with all the font files (light,regular,medium,semibold...)

So, I'm downloading free fonts that I want to try on my new Oasis, and I get several ttf files... Sometimes it's just the Regular, Italic, Bold and BoldItalic versions, and I copy all of those to the fonts directory of my kindle and it seems to work fine.

But sometimes I get a whole font family (ExtraLight, ExtralightItalic, Light, LightItalic, Regular, Italic, Medium, MediumItalic, SemiBold, SemiBoldItalic, Bold, BoldItalic, Black, BlackItalic...) when I sideload all of those, I seem to get the extralight version when I choose that font on my device.... should I just copy the regular, italic, Bold and BoldItalic and ignore the rest?

Yes, only use / copy those 4 basic styles.

Typically you copy four styles:
* Regular
* Italic
* Bold
* BoldItalic

I feel that Kindle will use the lightest style as the base font.

If you feel that Regular is too thin, you may use Medium/MediumItalic styles instead of Regular/Italic styles.

Not a good idea. Just use the regular versions. You can increase the weight of the fonts from the Aa menu.

What about the other case, when you open up a zipped font folder and find just one .ttf file? I'm always curious about why the basic four show up in many cases (depending on the font), while others have more files, and some only one. As you can tell, I am new to font discussions but I really enjoy experimenting with different fonts in my e-readers.

Sometimes you can download the font family in one go. Sometimes you get all of the variants (regular, thin. semi-bold, italic, bold, extra-bold, etc.) in one go and sometimes you have to download each font separately.

Thanks. I was beginning to suspect that was how it was, but this confirms it. Can be tricky finding what you need!
