Angry What has STUPID Amazon done now???

In the good times the Library showed books 1-8, 9-16, 17-24 etc. as you paged through. Then some genius decided we had to have the cover displayed at all times and that ruined it showing only 5 per page, i.e. 1-5, 6-10, 11-15 etc.. Now they've apparently decided we are too ignorant to know what we just looked at. Now the last book on the page becomes the first on the next page. Now it shows 1-5, 5-9, 9-13, 13-17 etc.. So now we only see 4 books effectively after page 1 of the library. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE FOOLS???

I have the PW5 and I love seeing the book cover thumbnails. I love the library, but can do without the home page. With the latest firmware the only thing I dislike is the home page. Everything else suits me just fine.

There apparently isn't a set number of books displayed per screen in list view. Each book can take up a variable amount of space and if the information for the last book is not completely displayed (including its bottom margin) then it will be repeated at the top of the next screen.

On my Oasis running 5.14.2 when set to standard display size most book entries are 20mm high but some with a shorter covers are only 18mm high. I see five books per screen with an occasional partial sixth.

When set to large display size most book entries are still 20mm high but some with are 21mm high because of the larger text. That results in an occasional repeated book on the next screen.

Hopefully Amazon will figure out how to make this work more consistently.

I like the re-design.

I have some 3500+ books in my library, so it is really never a good use of time to page through them, whether it is 7-8 at a time or 4-5 at a time. That said, it’s much easier to jump around now by using the scroll indicator or tapping some position to jump to (randomly tapping if you want to find something by serendipity). Search remains the best way to find something if you know some part of title or author in any library with more than a few hundred items.

I think they would do well to offer a List view without thumbnails, not just so more items can display, but so that they could use larger text for the title/author. And if you are using personal docs you don’t have to see a bunch of things without cover images (of course it would be nice if it Kindle would just generate thumbnails for them like it does with the Kindle apps).

Likewise, some folks would like a List mode when in Collections view.

Collections have more ‘show’ options and you can set filters when viewing them.

They need to fix the ‘missing author metadata’ problem (which predates these updates) so that author search/sort/display works 100% instead of 99%.

And Author grouping option, please.

Probably only 167 dpi too!

It's not just Amazon. World wide and on every kind of screen the GUI-UX is apparently being designed by people that know nothing about GUIs or UX. Or are being given design briefs by idiots.

Yes, I forgot to mention that aspect.

I have over 5000, mostly freebies, acquired since I think 2009. I usually have 1xx in my Kindle at any given time. Even so, I really want the option to choose for myself to turn off thumbnails if I prefer. And for them to figure out how to avoid repeating an entry from bottom of one page to top of the next page. Rather than fact checkers maybe we need more work checkers and design checkers.

While I have some where between 4500 and 5000 books in my Calibre library, I never have more than 7 books in my PW5. There just isn’t any need for so many books in the Kindle at any one time. If I am doing research I will use my laptop or tablet my kindle is for relaxation and entertainment

This is highly dependent on person's reading habits. On my Kindle I keep read books only if they are part of a series so that I can continue reading a new books from those series when they are published years after I've read the previous one... without re-reading all the previous books. I just use the search to remind myself about book characters, places and other stuff I've totally forgotten.

As for unread books I usually don't have more than 20.

What you mean is that there isn't any need for more than seven books at a time for you. What if someone traveling and is away from their computer for an extended time? What if someone wants to have their entire library with them so they can choose to read whatever they happen to be in the mood for on that particular day? I'm more like you, I don't have a whole lot books on my readers (most anyhow, a couple have over 100) but I also understand that there's a reason people are looking for 32 GB eReaders so they can carry their whole library. Choice is good.

All this is kind of beside the point, though. I personally like the old Kindle List view. Fortunately I don't have a Kindle that runs the newest firmware, and I'm happy about that.

I guess as a retired IT Professional I am never without my laptop, my, tablet or my kindle or smartphone. I also have my hearing aids and my chargers. I keep everything ready to go with a to go backpack that takes less than 5 minutes to prepare and go. And I have never liked the list view in any firmware version of kindle and I have had different kindles since 2009.

I understand. And it looks like this works well for you. But I carry a flip phone and (if I go somewhere where I'll have time to read) I carry an eReader. And, on Kindles, I've always liked the text list view. (The flip phone has a Hotspot feature, so I can buy and/or download books from Amazon or Kobo using a Kindle or Kobo device.)

I've about 3,700 books on my Sage now. Some are large PDF scans, but page size OK for 8" screen.
22.1 GByte of 32 GByte available.
At first use before adding books it was 28.4 GByte free, so that's 6.3 Gbyte of books.
My Original Libra had 6.7 GByte free of 8 GByte before books added. So it could certainly manage more than 4000 books if the scanned PDFs left off and only smaller page size manuals on it.

I don't see any reason not to have all the books (most are from Gutenberg which is why I bought an eink ereader originally) on the ereader that are on the laptop. It means any time of day or night, without electricity, mobile or laptop I have a library.

The Lady here is loving her Libra compared to the Kindle Paperwhite 3. She says she can so easily find any title or author. She found Kindle awkward to find books. Also Collections & Series views work properly from Calibre data. So she too is happy to have all her ebooks on the ereader.

We also have 4 off solar charged powerbanks and 2 off battery only power banks. So not dependent on electricity supply!

I'm gonna continue to beat the dead horse. Since there's no more covers for send-to-kindle documents/books, I have started sideloading my books via usb. Aside from whispersync not working anymore (I'm slowly starting to get over it), managing collections is a huge pain.

I still have about 1k+ books from my old library to sideload, and most of them are part of a series. I'm starting to miss Kobo. I used to do everything via calibre. Collections/Series were automatically created when I send books over.

Now I have to create the collections online, then add the books manually on my Kindle. It's really becoming a chore.
