Kindle paperwhite battery replacement

I don't use my Kindle very often, but I have noticed that my Paperwhite battery would drain faster than it used to. A fully charged Kindle, sitting, unused would drain to dead in less than a week.

I ordered a replacement battery from Amazon, watched a video on how to swap the battery and swapped it out.

And it made no difference.

I charged my Kindle to 100%, and let it sit, unplugged and unusued for 48 hours, and my battery drained to 50%.

With the infrequent use of my Kincle, I could easily get a month on a charge.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

Did your replacement battery have a manufacturing date stamped on it? At one time, I purchased a replacement battery that was close to a year older than the original battery. The battery transplant was a success but the patient was worse off.

I didn't look. Sounds like I am taking my Kindle apart again. Sigh...

sounds like a faulty charging voltage regulator on the Kindle. This is a common problem especially today when people use cheap usb charging bricks and dodgy usb cables.

You might find you get the same behaviour no matter how many times you change the battery.

How long does it take for the Green light to come on? Rapid charging can often be a sign of this.

Do make sure it's finished indexing. That runs down the battery.
I think if the charging circuit was damaged it might not charge at all, or not stop charging and set the battery on fire. One KK3 behaved strangely and needed a reset a couple of times after replacing the battery.

If it does charge at all and run for a day it's most likely that either the SW needs reset or the battery (really a cell) is too old or been stored too warm. I was pleased than the DXG battery I ordered was only about 18 months old and one of the KK3 batteries was only a month old before shipping (which took 6 weeks!).

Just an idea: my PW was stuck indexing books for a few days, thus battery would train faster. If you want to check just go to the homescreen and type nonsensical text into the search box and hit enter. From the search results page, if "text in books" is highlighted, tap it, and it will show how many ebooks are not yet indexed.

Whoa.. I have so many books .. huge one's.. does this mean I'm unnecessarily draining the battery by holding so many books on my kindle..

Should I keep holding small numbers.. to sustain battery. and keep adding as I move on.

No, it's only needed on USB power for indexing when you initially add the ebooks. After that it doesn't matter.

I am going to try a factory reset and see if that might help the issue.

I plugged the dead Kindle into my laptop and it fully charged somewhere between an hour and 2 hours.

Looks like the reset helped!

I did a factory reset at 11:00 AM this morning. Set it back up and charged it to 100%. At noon I unplugged it. It is now 3:16 PM and the Kindle is still at 100% battery.

Last night, I charged it to 100% at 6 PM. At 8:00 PM it was down to 90% already.

Time to side-load some books and see what happens.

It seems next to impossible to source a replacement battery in my case. For the time being the original battery seems to be in good health but eventually when it degrades is it possible to still use the device while plugged in at least?

The problem could have been an eBook stuck on indexing.

Not on a KK3. Would not run on charger when battery died. I have no idea about any of the Paperwhite models (now 5?)

ebay sellers have batteries.

Oh. That's too bad. These devices sure to seem to be built with obsolescence after some years in mind. Several ebay sellers just don't ship at all to my location and those that do shipping charges are unacceptably high. The local ban on Aliexpress has made matters worse. Thanks for your reply.
