Coloured Columns

Hello all.

I am running calibre 5.42 on a Mac Mini running Big Sur (11.6.5).

I’m trying to understand how the calibre configuration folder works so that I can back it up every week in case something goes wrong (like tonight, I clicked on a “defaults” button and lost ALL my column colour rules. Lesson learned.

So I created one simple rule that makes the text of ALL columns red if the author is Agatha Christie. I quit calibre and backed up the entire calibre configuration folder in my home directory on the mac: ~/library/preferences/calibre on an external drive.

I restarted calibre and changed the colour of the rule to yellow. I quit calibre. I deleted the calibre configuration folder from my home directory and replaced it with the entire folder from my backup drive. I was expecting that ALL columns would now be red again but this is NOT the case. The columns are still yellow.

So how can I be sure that my preferences are correctly backed up?

Thanks in advance.

That folder holds settings that apply to all libraries. Settings that are specific to a particular calibre library are stored in the database in the folder for that library. Back up your libraries.

Most things that depend on column names & types are stored in the metadata.db file in the library. Icon and color rules are in that group.

If you back up your library then you are backing up these preferences.

@kakkalla - per user (non-library specific) settings (including plugins) are in the directory that opens when the Preferences->Miscellaneous(last row)->Open calibre configuration button is pressed.

When calibre is not running - backup that directory.
